After three consecutive wins, the Philadelphia Eagles will look to continue their strong form when they host the struggling Jacksonville Jaguars at Lincoln Financial Field on Sunday.
The Eagles have strung together impressive victories over the Cleveland Browns, New York Giants and Cincinnati Bengals. Their 5-2 record has them atop the NFC East and in contention for the top seed in the conference.
Meanwhile, the Jaguars’ miserable season, which began with four straight defeats, took another turn for the worse last weekend.
Several key players left the game with injuries as Jacksonville were beaten 30-27 by a Green Bay Packers team led by backup quarterback Malik Willis.
Despite their contrasting fortunes, this matchup holds plenty of intrigue as under-fire Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson returns to face his former team. Pederson led the Eagles to their first Super Bowl title in 2017 before departing after the 2020 season.
A.J. Brown Over 83.5 Receiving Yards - 20/23
Despite featuring in only four of the Eagles’ seven games this year, A.J. Brown is the team’s top receiver with an average of 102 receiving yards per game and a staggering 19.4 yards per catch.
The veteran wideout has been on a tear recently, recording 84 or more receiving yards in each of his last three games.
It is not quite as impressive as the six-game sequence he put together between Weeks 3 and 8 of last season when Brown didn’t post fewer than 127 receiving yards in a game.
But it is more than enough evidence to suggest he can top 84 receiving yards against the league’s 31st-ranked pass defence who have given up an average of 271.1 yards per game.
Longest Touchdown Scored Over 37.5 yards - 20/23
One of the main reasons why Jacksonville’s defence has struggled is that they have been regularly punished by big plays, most of them through the air.
The Jaguars have given up passing completions of 45, 51, 63, 65, 67 and 80 yards through the first eight weeks.
As well as ranking second-last in the league in passing yards allowed, they are tied for last in TD passes surrendered (17).
It’s a weakness that the Eagles will be looking to exploit in their vertical passing attack which has yielded an impressive array of long-range touchdowns already this season.
Jalen Hurts found DeVonta Smith from 45 yards out against the Cincinnati Bengals, mirroring a similar scoring hookup from their Week 6 win over the Cleveland Browns.
The quarterback also connected with Brown for a 41-yard touchdown pass against the New York Giants in Week 7.
And when you factor in Saquon Barkley’s 65-yard TD run against the New Orleans Saints in Week 3, Philly has scored touchdowns of 40-yards plus in four of their last five games
Trevor Lawrence Over 1.5 Passing Touchdowns - 33/20
While the Jaguars have struggled overall, quarterback Trevor Lawrence has shown flashes of his potential.
He's thrown multiple touchdowns in four of their eight games this season and could get some joy against an Eagles defence who, while improving, have still shown some vulnerability through the air.
Philadelphia, who will be without injured starting cornerback Darius Slay on Sunday, have allowed at least two passing touchdowns in three of their seven games this season.
And with Jacksonville likely to be trailing and forced to throw, Lawrence should have opportunities to find the end zone multiple times, even in a losing effort.
Money Line | Spread | Over/Under | |
---|---|---|---|
Eagles | -7.5 - 20/21 | Over 46.0 - 10/11 | |
Jaguars | +7.5 20/23 | Under 46.0 - 10/11 |
Eagles -7.5 - 20/21
The Eagles are heavy favourites at home, and for good reason. They've been one of the NFL's most impressive teams over the past month, while the Jaguars continue to make costly mistakes.
Philadelphia's balanced offensive attack should be able to exploit Jacksonville's defensive weaknesses both on the ground and through the air. Defensively, the Eagles have found their footing in recent weeks too.
The talent disparity between these teams is pretty significant, especially considering the likely absences for the Jaguars this week.
It looks like a tough task for the visitors to keep the red-hot Eagles in check here and the home team should secure victory by more than a touchdown for a third straight game.
