Manchester City's Rodri is the current favourite to win the PFA Player of the Year award after breaking the record for the most appearances unbeaten in English football.

PFA Player of the Year 2023/24

City's 3-1 victory over rivals Manchester United - in which Rodri registered two assists - saw the 27-year-old seal his 59th consecutive win in all competitions at club level, surpassing Ricardo Carvalho's record set for Chelsea back in 2008.

The Spanish international's remarkable run dates back to 5th February 2023, when Pep Guardiola's side suffered a 1-0 defeat away at Tottenham in the Premier League.

In this period Rodri and his City teammates have collected a remarkable four trophies - completing the Treble of the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup last term before adding the Club World Cup to their rapidly growing list of honours in December.

Rodri's importance in this current City side is vividly reflected in the fact all three of the Citizens' league defeats this season - against Wolves, Arsenal and Aston Villa - have came when the ex-Atletico Madrid midfielder has been sidelined due to suspension.

It is little wonder then that Rodri is one of the main contenders to win the PFA Player of the Year award as City bid to secure an unprecedented fourth consecutive Premier League title.

Although primarily charged with holding City's midfielder together and protecting the backline behind him, Rodri has also demonstrated his ability to contribute in the final third at pivotal moments this season.

Recording a commendable six goals and six assists in the Premier League this season, Rodri has stepped up when it matters most for City in this campaign - bagging a late winner against Sheffield United at Bramall Lane at the start of the season and netting two crucial late strikes home and away against Chelsea.

A tall and powerful holding midfielder, Rodri is a natural leader in the middle of the park who adds an air of invincibility to this juggernaut of a City side under Guardiola.

Although individual honours are typically reserved for more headline-making forward players, Rodri's influence within this phenomenal City team this season makes him difficult to ignore.
