Heading into his title fight rematch with Petr Yan at UFC 323 back in December Merab Dvalishvili was on the verge of history.
The Georgian grappler had aspirations of becoming the first man ever to win four UFC title fights in a calendar year, and in Yan he had an opponent he had already beaten decisively just two years previously.
Ultimately though it was Yan that emerged victorious, effectively nullifying Dvalishvili's relentless offence over the course of 25 minutes to become a two-time UFC champion.
With bantamweight bragging rights on the line MMA expert Adam Catterall claimed Yan will manage to once again get his hand raised.
"The performance that Petr Yan put on in their last fight was out of this world." Catterall said on bet365 Cageside.
"Merab needs to find the Merab that fought Petr Yan the first time. He will be confident that it is there, he's had a nice rest, he's ready to go again. This is a big opportunity for him to go down as one of the greats in this division.
"If he wins here and becomes a two-time champion people will be talking about him being the greatest bantamweight of all time.
"I just feel like Petr Yan is in a flow state. That performance in December will give him an incredible amount of confidence coming in to this.
"You know how this fight plays out stylistically. You've got one elite striker who has got some good grappling and one who is just a sensational grappler with a relentless gas tank. Which is going to break first?
"Are we going to see the first fight between these two guys or the second?
"I've got a funny feeling that it is going to be a mix of both, this might be the best out of the three but I think Petr Yan is going to edge it on points.
"It might even be contentious. We're in for a great fight but I'm edging towards Petr Yan on points."
