Pep Guardiola's cup final record

Crystal Palace, in search of their first major trophy, take on Manchester City in this season's FA Cup final and City boss Pep Guardiola's cup final record makes for ominous reading for the Eagles.

Having managed Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Manchester City throughout his career, Guardiola is one of the most decorated managers in world football.

And as well as having hoovered up 12 league titles in his coaching career, Guardiola also has a formidable record of 21 wins in 23 cup finals as a manager.

He has won the UEFA Champions League three times, triumphing with two different clubs, and he has won each of the Copa del Rey, DFB Pokal and FA Cup on two occasions.

His cup final record indeed emphasises that he is a man for the big occasion and, ahead of his side's FA Cup final meeting with Palace, here is a look at some of his most memorable cup finals, including the two occasions in which he sustained defeats.

Barcelona 2-0 Manchester United, UEFA Champions League final, May 2009

The 2008/09 Champions League final between Guardiola's Barcelona and Sir Alex Ferguson's Manchester United was special for a number of reasons.

First of all, it was the second successive Champions League final United had reached, after beating Chelsea on penalties the season before, making them the first defending champions to reach the final since 1997.

But it was Barcelona who came out on top 2-0 thanks to goals from Samuel Eto'o and a young Lionel Messi.

Regarded as one of the best teams of all time, the win meant Barcelona became the first ever Spanish club to win the treble, starting an era of domination.

Bayern Munich 2-0 Borussia Dortmund, DFB Pokal final, 2014

Guardiola could not deliver a Champions League title during his Bayern Munich tenure but he achieved plenty of domestic success with the Bavarians, including his first DFB Pokal trophy in 2014.

It was Guardiola's first season in charge of the club and the cup triumph formed part of a domestic double, made sweeter by the fact it was rivals Dortmund they took down in the final at the Olympiastadion.

Arsenal 0-3 Manchester City, EFL Cup final, February 2018

The EFL Cup can't match the level of the Champions League but Manchester City's triumph over Arsenal in the 2017/18 final will live long in the memory of Guardiola.

It was the first time Guardiola had led City to a major final and represented his first trophy at the club.

Sergio Aguero, Vincent Kompany and David Silva were on the scoresheet and City went on to win the Premier League later that same season.

Chelsea 1-0 Manchester City, UEFA Champions League final, 2021

The noise around Manchester City needing to win the Champions League reached fever pitch when they made the final in 2020/21 but it was not to be for Guardiola's side.

Up against Chelsea at the Estadio do Dragao in Portugal, City were beaten 1-0 with Kai Havertz scoring the only goal of the game.

It was the first time Guardiola had reached a major final and lost as a manager and was a night to forget for fans of the Citizens.

Manchester City 1-0 Inter, UEFA Champions League final 2023

It took just two years for Manchester City's redemption in the Champions League as they went on to lift the trophy at the end of the 2022/23 campaign.

That time around they were the side to win 1-0, downing an experienced Inter team in Istanbul thanks to a second-half strike from Rodri.

It was the first time ever that Manchester City won the competition and was their first European trophy of any kind since 1970.

Manchester City 1-2 Manchester United, FA Cup final 2024

The only other time Guardiola lost a cup final as manager was last year, when Manchester City sustained a shock defeat to rivals Manchester United.

City had beaten United the season before in the 2022/23 final but the Red Devils got their revenge when the sides squared up at Wembley last May.

Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo were the goalscorers for Manchester United, who had led 2-0 until the 87th minute, when Jeremy Doku bagged a late consolation goal.

The trophy win ultimately led to United keeping Erik ten Hag on at the club, although he was dismissed just five months later.
