Paul Ince: This is the worst Manchester United team of all time; Ruben Amorim must adapt

Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Ince has called for Ruben Amorim to adapt his system if he's to achieve success at Old Trafford.

Although his arrived in November, Amorim has overseen the worst campaign in living memory for most Manchester United supporters, with the club loitering above the Premier League relegation zone for much of the season.

Players have struggled to adapt to Amorim's 3-4-2-1 system, and Ince feels the Portuguese needs to show more flexibility.

"First of all, I like Amorim, but you often see managers go into football clubs and they get a bounce and kick on over the first few games irrespective of what formation you’re playing and we’ve not seen any progression," said Ince.

"Finishing where they finished this year, they’re the worst Manchester United team of all time and you shouldn’t ever say that about a Manchester United team, whether you’re playing 4-3-3, 3-5-2 or 3-4-3, it shouldn’t matter. You’ve still got very good players there playing for one of the biggest clubs in the world.

"To go into a team that’s basically Erik ten Hag’s team with no real change in personnel and expect those players who played in a 4-2-3-1 to play in a 3-4-3, we’ve seen this season it doesn’t fit, the players don’t like it, they’re not used to it.

"Ultimately football’s about the players. The players are used to playing how they have all their lives and all of a sudden you’re asking players to do different things, it isn’t going to work.

"Some say he needs to bring his own players in, but how many players does he need to bring in? With PSR you’ve got to sell players so there’ll be a lot of juggling around.

"Over the last 10 years, there’s been no progress. Yes there’s been a few cups, but in terms of competing for the UEFA Champions League and competing with the top three or four in the Premier League, United are miles away, and I’ve not seen any difference this season."

Ince has also questioned Amorim's handling of Alejandro Garnacho. The Argentine won his place back under the head coach but was dropped for the Europa League final, and has reportedly been told to find a new club following his public reaction to being left out.

"They put all their eggs in one basket to try and win the Europa League and that was a disaster," said Ince.

"From the outside looking in, I’m thinking 'why are you playing Mason Mount and Luke Shaw who haven’t played all season?' Alejandro Garnacho has played all season and now he’s looking to leave the football club.

"It’s good to be open with the fans, but fans don’t need to know everything. They don’t need to know that he wants to get rid of Marcus Rashford or Garnacho. Sir Alex Ferguson would have never said that, that would’ve been kept internal."
