Following a defeat at Luton on Wednesday night, Northampton Town have been relegated from the third tier after a disastrous run of form since Christmas.
The Cobblers sat comfortably in the top half of League One after a 3-1 win against AFC Wimbledon 19th December, but a run of one win in 22 games has seen them slip further and further down the table and they are now bottom with four games to go.
A big turning point in the season seemed to take place at Burton Albion on Boxing Day when Kevin Nolan's side conceded four first-half goals and went on to lose 5-1 at the Pirelli Stadium.
That result was followed up by a 2-0 defeat at Huddersfield Town and despite back-to-back draws against Stockport County and Bolton Wanderers, Northampton ended January with four straight defeats.
There was also some unrest from Northampton fans at the end of the month as they failed to replace on-loan striker Ethan Wheatley, who was recalled by Manchester United and sent to Bradford City.
Scoring goals has clearly been a problem throughout the season and they have failed to score in 18 league games so far in 2025/26.
Despite the lack of movement in the transfer window, Northampton did experience a brief upturn in form with a three-game unbeaten run that included a 3-1 victory over Stevenage, before they suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat at leaders Lincoln City.
It was a pivotal week for Northampton towards the end of February as they hosted bottom half sides Leyton Orient, Port Vale and local rivals Peterborough United in the space of seven days.
Picking up just one point from a possible nine in that period left the Cobblers in real danger and a 1-0 defeat at AFC Wimbledon in their next fixture resulted in the club parting company with manager Kevin Nolan.
Technical director Colin Calderwood has taken caretaker charge at Sixfields, but results have continued to deteriorate and a run of six straight defeats since he took over has led the club dropping down to League Two.
The club are expecting to appoint a new manager at the end of the season and will be hoping they can have the desired impact and orchestrate an instant return to the third tier.
