NFL - US Sports: Niners to let Garoppolo rehab elsewhere

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo will be another absentee from the NFC West team's off-season conditioning program when it begins on Tuesday.

Following the news that Deebo Samuel will skip on-field drills as he pushes for a long-term contract extension, the 49ers - 11/2 to win the NFC Championship - won't expect to see Garoppolo around their Santa Clara facility in the next few days.

QB recovering from shoulder op

The veteran QB is rehabbing his surgically repaired shoulder and the 49ers are understood to be on board with his personal rehab plan, according to NFL Network.

Garoppolo is reportedly expected to be back throwing at full strength by late June or early July, barring any setbacks, but for which team remains up for debate.

Speaking in the aftermath of the Niners' loss to the Rams in the NFC Championship Game last January, Garoppolo said he and 49ers general manager John Lynch had talked "about finding the right destination" for the 2022 season.

San Francisco are preparing the way for their 2021 No.3 overall pick Trey Lance to take over the starting job, but, even with the quarterback carousel moving at a pace since the start of the new NFL calendar year, Garoppolo's market has continued to get thinner by the week.

Garropolo may yet stay put

All should become clearer after the draft when the remaining quarterback-needy teams make their moves for the top college prospects, but it is possible that the 49ers could keep Garoppolo, whose $137.5million contract expires next March.

The 30-year-old has a non-guaranteed $24.2m base salary this season and the 49ers are currently very tight against the salary cap.

But Lynch has said the team have budgeted for the possibility that Garoppolo remains on the roster through 2022.
