Nicky Henderson Trainer - Winners, records, statistics and earnings

Nicky Henderson is one of Britain's most successful trainers in the National Hunt game, operating at the top of the sport for more than four decades.

Henderson holds a record tally of 73 winners at the Cheltenham Festival, a total unmatched by any British trainer, past or present.

The Seven Barrows-based operator has been Britain's champion trainer over jumps six times.

Who is Nicky Henderson?

Henderson is a long-standing and highly decorated National Hunt trainer, having first taken out his licence in 1978.

Henderson rode 75 winners as an amateur jockey and was also assistant trainer to Fred Winter. His father was Johnny Henderson, one of the founders of the Racecourse Holdings Trust, and after whom the Grand Annual Chase at the Cheltenham Festival is named.

Henderson was educated at Eton, and is based at Seven Barrows in Lambourn, Berkshire. He has been champion trainer over jumps in Britain on six occasions, winning his first title in 1985-86 and, most recently, in the 2019-20 season. He has been leading trainer at the Cheltenham Festival three times.

Henderson is notoriously patient with his horses and they often peak late in the season, which has provided him with an impressive record at Cheltenham, where he has saddled 73 Festival winners.

Henderson has also been known to land a coup on the Flat, winning the Cesarewitch at Newmarket with Landing Light (2003), Caracciola (2008) and Buzz (2022).

Who is Nicky Henderson's stable jockey?

Nico de Boinville is the current number one at Seven Barrows. De Boinville had intended to study politics at University, but instead chose to focus his attentions on racing.

After a stint in France with Richard Gibson, de Boinville found himself at Henderson's Seven Barrows where he says he was not even among the top three amateur riders when he arrived.

From May 2009 until April 2012 he had two winners in 30 rides and, aged 22, he handed in his notice. By that point Henderson had seen enough to believe he had a talent in his ranks and he refused to accept De Boinville's resignation. The rest is history and the rider now has more Grade 1 wins than any active British-based jockey.

Before De Boinville, Mick Fitzgerald, Barry Geraghty and AP McCoy were major contributors to the Henderson operation.

Nicky Henderson's Cheltenham Festival winners

Henderson's first Cheltenham Festival win remains one his finest. See You Then bagged the Champion Hurdle in 1985 and went on to land two more in successive years, making him one of only five three-time winners of the race.

Henderson's record tally of Champion Hurdle wins stands at nine, with Punjabi (2009), Binocular (2010), Buveur D'Air (2017, 2018), Epatante (2020) and Constitution Hill (2023) all scoring in the two-mile Championship race.

He has also won two Gold Cups via Long Run (2011) and Bobs Worth (2013), two Stayers' Hurdles with Rustle (1989) and Bacchanal (2000) and a magnificent joint-record six Queen Mother Champion Chases via Remittance Man (1992), Finian's Rainbow (2012), Sprinter Sacre (2013, 2016) and Altior (2018, 2019).

Henderson also holds the record for wins in the Triumph Hurdle and the Arkle, with seven wins in each. He won the Johnny Henderson Grand Annual Chase – named in honour of his late father – with Greenhope (2006) and Bellvano (2012). In total, 47 of his Cheltenham Festival wins have come in Grade 1 company.

In 2024, Henderson's string were under a cloud when the Festival rolled around. Constitution Hill was forced to skip the defence of his Champion Hurdle crown and, when his horses failed to fire in the Cotswolds, Henderson was left with little option but to rule out Shishkin, Sir Gino and Jonbon from their major targets in what was a bitterly frustrating turn of events for the iconic trainer.

Nicky Henderson's Grand National record

Famously, Henderson has not been able to win the Grand National at Aintree in his career. Indeed, the highly-decorated handler is without success in any of the four major Grand Nationals – Aintree as well as the Welsh, Scottish and Irish versions.

Zongalero, ridden by Bob Davies, finished second at Aintree in 1979, Henderson's first attempt at the great race, and that remains the closest he has come.

Nicky Henderson's best horses

Henderson has trained more than his share of top-class animals. See You Then was his first star, winning those three Champion Hurdles, and he has been associated with some of the best two-milers over timber of their generations, including the likes of Buveur D'Air, My Tent Or Yours and the mare, Epatante.

Constitution Hill remains unbeaten after missing out on a run at Cheltenham this season but still retains the potential to be the best Henderson has trained over hurdles.

Long Run and Bobs Worth both won the Gold Cup, while the former won the King George at Kempton twice, but perhaps Henderson is more commonly associated with speedsters over fences too.

Sprinter Sacre was one of the icons of this century, conquering all as a two-mile chaser by 2013 before injury derailed him, only for his master-trainer to get him back to his best to regain the Champion Chase crown in 2016 – arguably one of Henderson's greatest achievements.

Altior won successive Queen Mother Champion Chases and was unbeaten over jumps in a record 19 consecutive starts at one stage. The Henderson production line is not quite as prolific as some, but he tends to concentrate on quality over quantity.

Nicky Henderson's career earnings

Henderson's career earnings are tough to quantify. His winnings in UK jumps races in the last five seasons is just shy of £11m, while he has won £305k on the Flat in the same timeframe.
