San Francisco 49ers v Detroit Lions: Prediction, Tips and Odds

The Detroit Lions cannot afford to slip up against the San Francisco 49ers at Levi’s Stadium on Monday Night Football as Week 17’s action concludes with a rematch of last season's NFC Championship Game.

The Minnesota Vikings’ 27-25 victory over the Green Bay Packers on Sunday means the 13-2 Lions have to win to keep pace with their NFC North rivals.

Detroit’s rivalry with the 49ers stepped up a notch after San Francicso stormed back from a 24-7 half-time deficit to deny the Lions their first Super Bowl appearance last January.

But the teams’ fortunes have gone in opposite directions this season with Detroit becoming a dominant force in the league while the 6-9 Niners have been unable to string anything more than two wins together at a time.

Both have been decimated by injuries this year with San Francisco’s offence and Detroit’s defence crippled by key losses.

However, the Lions have managed to keep on winning thanks to their top-ranked scoring offence as the 49ers have faded after failing to put more than 10 points on the board in three of their last five games.

Now eliminated from playoff contention, they can only play a spoiler’s role in Detroit’s bid to secure the top seeding for the first time since the conference structure was established in 1970.

San Francisco 49ers v Detroit Lions prop bets - tips and predictions

Jahmyr Gibbs over 93.5 rushing yards - 10/11

With David Montgomery sidelined due to injury, Jahmyr Gibbs took on a larger role in the Lions' offence against the Chicago Bears last week.

He responded with 154 all-purpose yards, including more than 100 on the ground for the third time this season.

Gibbs, who now leads the team with 1,156 rushing yards this season, can consistently get to the second level against a 49ers defence that has struggled to contain running backs in recent weeks.

The Miami Dolphins gained 166 yards rushing against them last week with De’Von Achane accumulating 120 of them on 17 carries, while the Los Angeles Rams had 160 yards of rushing in San Francisco’s Week 15 home loss.

Look for Gibbs to exceed this rushing yardage total as the Lions lean on their ground game at Levi’s Stadium.

Brock Purdy over 253.5 passing yards - 10/11

Quarterback Brock Purdy has found ways to prosper despite San Francisco’s injury problems, which have affected both his protection and weaponry.

Purdy has been sacked multiple times in six of the Niners’ last seven games, but he has thrown for at least 260 yards in four of those games.

If you can forgive him an off night in horrid conditions against the Rams two weeks ago, Purdy has passed for a healthy average of 8.5 yards per attempt over the other six games since the 49ers bye week.

His season average for yards per attempt is the third best in the NFL and he should be able to surpass 254 yards through the air on Monday.

Detroit's quest to be the NFC's top seed remains firmly on course, and Dan Campbell's men have been faultless on the road this season.

The Lions are the NFL's only undefeated team away from home, boasting a franchise-record seven road victories.

They have won those games by an average margin of 13.71 points and dominated possession by having the ball for 54% of the time.

These traits make them appealing as 3.5-point favourites against a 49ers team that has lost three straight games and will be without several key players.

San Francisco’s top two left tackles, Trent Williams and Jaylon Moore, as well as their top two left guards, Aaron Banks and Ben Bartch, are injured.

The Lions are getting healthier, with guard Graham Glasgow expected to return to the line-up after a knee problem kept him out against the Bears.

Detroit's offence ranks second overall and first in scoring, while their defense has improved to seventh in points allowed.

San Francisco, meanwhile, could not surpass the 18-point mark in a loss for the seventh time this season when they failed to deal with the Dolphins.

The 49ers have not won the turnover battle for seven straight games and are -8 in turnover differential over their last five games combined.

Now they have nothing to play for, it is hard to envisage a scenario where the Lions, who are 10-5 against the spread this season, do not win this game by at least four points.
