The Los Angeles Rams will be without Myles Garrett for a prolonged period as the reigning defensive player of the year undergoes arthroscopic surgery on a long-standing knee issue.
Garrett joined the Rams from the Cleveland Browns in the summer and made his debut for the Los Angeles franchise in their season-opening defeat to the San Francisco 49ers in Melbourne.
However, the five-time All-Pro had been suffering with a knee problem leading into the new season which forced him to miss the bulk of the Rams' training camp.
The Rams thought it was an issue Garrett would be able to work through, but following the match in Australia where Garrett struggled to make an impact, the franchise made the decision to try and rectify the issue now instead of damaging his long-term health.
We 've taken a look at how long Garrett could be sidelined for.
Whilst Sean McVay was unwilling to put a definitive timescale on Garrett's return, the Rams head coach does expect the 30-year-old to be at his disposal in a month's time.
Following the game against the 49ers, Garrett said: "I've got to find a way to recover and get back to the player I know I can be and I've shown that I've been before."
Garrett has been placed on the injured reserve list, which rules him out of the next four matches against the New York Giants, Denver Broncos, Philadelphia Eagles and Buffalo Bills.
The earliest possible date Garrett could return to action is against the Cardinals on 18th October, but it hinges entirely on how the defensive end responds to surgery and McVay added they will take his rehabilitation "one day at a time".
