The Kansas City Chiefs meet the Philadelphia Eagles in Sunday's NFL Championship game for the second time in three seasons and Racing Post's Phil Agius has picked out his three favourite bets for the big game at the Superdome in New Orleans.
History could be made in New Orleans on Sunday as the Kansas City Chiefs bid to become the first team to win the NFL Championship in three successive seasons.
Only the Philadelphia Eagles stand between the Chiefs and their fourth title win in six seasons and they went close when the teams met in the season finale two years ago, losing that game in Arizona 38-35.
The last three championship-deciders have all been settled by margins of just three points and last season the Chiefs beat the San Francisco 49ers in overtime. The odds suggest another close contest is on the cards and it's hard to argue with that assessment.
The teams have met only once since their 2023 meeting, with the Eagles gaining an element of revenge by winning 21-17 in November of the following season, but the Chiefs have the edge 6-5 in their all-time meetings.
The Chiefs went 15-2 in the regular season, winning the AFC West for an amazing ninth successive season and saw off the Houston Texans in the divisional round before an impressive 32-29 victory over the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Championship.
The Eagles were not far behind at 14-3. That was only good enough for the second seed in the play-offs but they have made smooth progress with postseason wins over the Green Bay Packers, Los Angeles Rams and Washington Commanders.
Marquise Brown over 3.5 receptions - 10/13
Marquise 'Hollywood' Brown was meant to be a major figure in the Kansas City offence this season, but things didn't work out that way as the former Ravens and Cardinals wide receiver suffered a serious shoulder injury in the summer.
He was not able to return to the field until December but has already earned the faith of his head coach and been targeted 22 times in his first four games back.
Brown caught nine passes in the two regular-season games he played and snared three catches for 35 yards against the Bills in the play-offs.
The two-week preparation period for this game has given Brown more time to become integrated into the offence and it would be no surprise to see him playing a key role on Sunday and catching at least four passes.
Over 5.5 sacks - 11/10
Both defences love to sack the opposing quarterback and they should have an impact on the game.
The dangerous Eagles pass-rush is probably the second-biggest worry for the Chiefs heading into this game after Saquon Barkley and while Mahomes is mobile and will use his legs to escape pressure, he is not likely to emerge unscathed.
Mahomes was sacked 36 times in the regular season and has gone down five more times in the play-offs as the Chiefs are forced to field a reshuffled offensive line with left guard Joe Thuney having to fill in at left tackle.
Philadelphia quarterback Jalen Hurts has been sacked 11 times in three play-off games and faces a wily opponent in Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, who loves to unleash blitzes to baffle opposing passers. Backing at least six sacks in the game appeals.
Money Line | Spread | Over/Under
Chiefs | -1.0 - 10/11 | Over 48.5 - 10/11
Eagles | +1.0 - 10/11 | Under 48.5 - 10/11 |
Kansas City Chiefs ML - 5/6
The Chiefs have become a regular fixture in the NFL Championship as this is their fifth appearance in the last six seasons. They have won three of those contests and it would be no surprise to see head coach Andy Reid and quarterback Patrick Mahomes combining for their fourth title together.
The savvy pair have mastered the art of winning close games with only three of their regular-season victories coming by more than 10 points and their last two title wins have both been secured in dramatic circumstances.
The men from Missouri may give their fans a few scares again, but they have proved that they can be trusted on the biggest stage of them all. While they didn't often shine in the regular season, they were able to churn out victories and have entered the final phase of the season in the best shape they have been all year.
Early injuries to wide receivers Rashee Rice, Marquise 'Hollywood' Brown and running back Isiah Pacheco threatened to derail their campaign but Brown and Pacheco are both back in action now and the overall roster is stronger now thanks to the players who were brought in to cover their absences.
The Eagles should not be taken lightly as they have a potential game-wrecker in running back Saquon Barkley, who rushed for more than 2,000 yards in the regular season.
Their defence has been greatly improved through the draft over the last couple of seasons and they are capable of running the Chiefs close, but Mahomes is hard to oppose on the big occasion.
