NFL Championship 2024/25: Prediction, Tips and Odds

The Kansas City Chiefs became the first team to win back-to-back NFL Championships for 19 years when they overcame the San Francisco 49ers in February, and they will be looking to make history as the first team ever to win three in a row.

Racing Post's Phil Agius has picked out his three best bets for the new NFL season and believes the Chiefs have a great chance of going the full distance for a third successive year.

Kansas City Chiefs to win 2024/25 NFL Championship - 11/2

No sooner had the ticker tape settled on the Kansas City Chiefs' third NFL Championship success in five years than talk turned to the chances of them completing a three-peat with another triumph in New Orleans next February.

The Chiefs' latest win was achieved in a different fashion to their previous successes, which came on the back of a flamboyant offence led by a magician of a quarterback in Patrick Mahomes.

Mahomes has reached at least the AFC Championship game in all of his seasons as a starter and the Chiefs have now won the AFC West division for the last eight seasons.

An 11-6 record last year was their worst since 2017 but it came in a season when their defence made a much larger contribution to their overall success than had previously been the case.

The Chiefs' offence has been refreshed, with the headline addition being rookie receiver Xavier Worthy.

General managers around the league must be kicking themselves at letting the player with the fastest 40-yard dash time in the history of the scouting combine fall into the hands of offensive wizard Andy Reid, while high-profile tight end Travis Kelce should have at least one more year at the top in him.

The Chiefs have lost star cornerback L'Jarius Sneed but defensive tackle Chris Jones has signed a new five-year contract and is the dominant force in the Chiefs defence.

The San Francisco 49ers are high up in the NFL Championship betting after their near miss last season but they had some close calls in their run to the big game and face stronger competition both in their division from the improving Los Angeles Rams and in their conference from the Philadelphia Eagles, Dallas Cowboys, Detroit Lions and Green Bay Packers.

The NFC is looking stronger than it has for some time and the 49ers don't represent a great value bet.

Of the potential AFC challengers, the Buffalo Bills look to have missed their window to win the big one and could be overtaken in their division by the Miami Dolphins.

The Houston Texans should build on last season's play-off run with CJ Stroud at quarterback but they have a tougher schedule to overcome this time.

The Baltimore Ravens are favourites in the highly competitive AFC North, but have suffered key defensive losses, including coordinator Mike Macdonald (now the head coach of the Seahawks), and if anything the cases of the Chiefs' rivals look weaker this season.

Miami Dolphins over 10.5 regular-season wins - 17/10

The Dolphins have made the play-offs in both of Mike McDaniel's seasons as their head coach and the Florida-based squad can be hopeful of at least matching last season's 11-6 record.

The team from the Sunshine State were on course for an even stronger showing but they faded a little as the weather turned cold and lost three of their last five regular-season games, handing them a tough draw and a play-off loss to the Chiefs.

They had reached 5-1 and 9-3 in relatively smooth fashion, though, with those early losses all coming away from home against top teams in the Bills, Eagles and Chiefs.

With Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle forming one of the strongest wide receiver duos in the league and a battery of speedy running backs, the Dolphins should be able to achieve a win tally well into double figures.

New England Patriots to have the worst regular-season record - 16/5

The most dominant NFL franchise before the Chiefs were the New England Patriots, who won six championships under Bill Belichick between 2002 and 2019, but the mighty have fallen a long way and it's no surprise to see the Massachusetts franchise favourites to have the worst regular-season record.

The Patriots managed four wins last season in their final year under Belichick and new head coach DeMeco Ryans has been left with a pretty bare cupboard in terms of talent to work with.

Promising rookie QB Drake Maye may win the starting job ahead of journeyman Jacoby Brissett, but there's little to like about the roster with Matthew Judon the latest defensive talent to depart.

The Carolina Panthers went 2-15 last year to 'win' this category but the outlook is brighter for them this season and they should progress past the Patriots.
