Premier League: Next Wolves manager odds

Bruno Lage has become the third Premier League managerial casualty of the season after 16 months at the helm for Wolves, so who is the favourite to take over at Molineux?

It is perhaps unsurprising that the frontrunners to be the next man in charge at Wolverhampton Wanderers are Portuguese managers.

The last two managers along with a plethora of incoming players over the last few years have been Portuguese, and the early favourite with bet365 is current Sporting CP manager Ruben Amorim.

The former Benfica midfielder is 5/4 to be the next man in charge at Molineux after he led his current side to their first league title in 19 years in 2021 and completed an impressive run to last 16 of the Champions League last season.

Amorim coached his way up through the lower levels of Portuguese football with the 37-year-old managing Braga before his move the Lisbon club. He holds an impressive record of winning the last three consecutive Portuguese League Cups.

Another Portuguese manager among the favourites to take over at Wolves is former Olympiakos manager Pedro Martins.

The 52-year-old spent his whole career playing in Portugal and like Amorim worked his way up managing in the Portuguese lower leagues. He recently spent four seasons in Greece in at Olympiakos where he won three consecutive Greek Super Leagues before being sacked in the summer.

Martins is 11/2 with bet365 to be appointed at Molineux, the third favourite for the job, behind current Sevilla manager Julien Lopetegui who is second favourite at 5/1.

Lopetegui is the only non-Portuguese man considered to be among the front-runners to be the next manager of Wolves. The former Spain and Real Madrid manager is reportedly on the brink of being sacked at current club Sevilla and Wolves may consider snapping him up if his three-year stint in Seville comes to an end.

The 56-year-old won the 2020 Europa League with his current side but has struggled domestically this season, with Sevilla lingering one point outside the relegation zone in La Liga having only won a single game this season and losing four.

Further afield in the betting is former Burnley manager Sean Dyche who is available at 12/1. Dyche was dismissed from his job at Turf Moor after almost 10 years in charge with the club sitting in the relegation zone.

The Wolves hierarchy may already be prioritising survival given their poor start to the season and a pragmatic though unfashionable appointment like Dyche would certainly tick the survival boxes. Although the appointment may be unpopular with fans hoping to see an exciting brand of football at Molineux, especially with some of the flair players the club has signed in recent years.

More Portuguese managers make up the outsiders in the betting with former Chelsea and Spurs manager Andre Villas Boas slightly longer at 14/1, joined by current Porto boss Sergio Conceicao at the same price of 14/1.

Current Wolves player Joao Moutinho is 16/1 to transition from playing to managing. The 36-year-old is vastly experienced and has been with the club since 2018.

Anyone fancying a fairy tale return of former manager Nuno Espirito Santo can back him at 33/1 to begin a second stint at the Black Country club where he remains a popular figure.
