Presidential term limits in the US means no president can serve more than two terms, meaning President Trump won't be eligible to run again in four years' time, which will likely put the vice president-elect in the hot seat.
There's a history of vice presidents making the step up in future elections, with the likes of Richard Nixon, Lyndon B Johnson, Gerald Ford, George HW Bush and Joe Biden all serving as vice presidents before being elected president since 1953, while Walter Mondale, Al Gore and Kamala Harris all served as vice presidents before unsuccessfully running for president.
The Democratic Party have a huge rebuilding task ahead of them, having lost all seven swing states of Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, even losing the popular vote for only the second time in the last nine elections.
Gavin Newsom, the Democratic governor of California and outspoken critic of the president-elect is second favourite and will likely target a run for president in 2028, while Florida governor Ron DeSantis, who ran for president in 2024, is joint-third favourite alongside former First Lady Michelle Obama.
