Next Plymouth Arygle manager contenders

Find out who might take over at Plymouth Argyle after the club announced that Miron Muslic has joined Schalke.

League One

Famous victory over Liverpool in the FA Cup fourth round combined with a tidy end to the season led to optimism ahead of what should have been Miron Muslic's first full season in charge of Plymouth Argyle.

But - with Muslic unable to keep the club in the Championship - Arygle confirmed that they had given the 42-year-old permission to speak to a German club.

Muslic replaced Wayne Rooney at Home Park after a run of one win from 14 games saw the former Manchester United forward relieved from his duties.

Plymouth potential next manager

Des Buckingham

A player in Oxford's youth setup, Des Buckingham led his boyhood club to Championship promotion during a sensational 2023/24 season but his path to management at the Kassam Stadium was not straightforward.

His time as head coach with the 'U's' was preceded by successful spells in New Zealand, Australia, India - winning the league in both Melbourne City and Mumbai City.

Oxford - playing their first Championship season for 25 years - made a decent start to their second-tier campaign under Buckingham but he was sacked in December with his side sat 20th.

Adin Osmanbasic

Joining the club as assistant to outgoing manager Miron Muslic, the appointment of Adin Osmanbasic would represent continuity at Home Park.

After previously working under Muslic Cercle Brugge, there has been past links between Osmanbasic and a top job of his own.

The American began his coaching journey at a young age after his professional playing career began to falter with his first job a video analyst at MLS side Colombus Crew.

From there he moved back into coaching - a role that he described as his 'true passion' - with then brand new club Atlanta United.

Ruben Selles

Austrian Miron Muslic was Plymouth's first-ever managerial appointment outside of the British Isles so a continuation of that could see The Pilgrims land on Ruben Selles.

The Spaniard was born in Valencia but is fluent English, Russian and Norweigan - picking up several languages through a coaching career that has taken him to seven different countries.

Selles was recently, and according to many, unfairly dismissed by Hull after he successfully steered his side clear of Championship relegation.

He joined from Reading where the 41-year-old received wide praise for the job he was doing with the Royals in League One.

Jack Wilshere

After leaving Norwich recently, Jack Wilshere has made no secret of his desire to become a head coach.

The 33-year-old took charge of the Canaries for two matches at the end of the season following the departure of Johannes Hoff Thorup.

Reports suggest that Wilshere is keen on taking the Plymouth job and is set to be interviewed alongside the aforementioned Des Buckingham.

Before his time at Carrow Road, Wilshere spent time coaching in Arsenal's youth set up where he guided the U18 side to the 2022/23 FA Youth Cup final.

Tom Cleverley

There were a few eyebrows raised when Tom Cleverley was dismissed by Watford following the conclusion of the Championship season.

A former captain at Vicarage Road, the 35-year-old built a fantastic relationship with the fans and a 14th place finish was viewed as solid with Watford expected to struggle before the start of the campaign.

Cleverley earned the job on a permanent basis following a run of just one defeat from seven games after being given the role on an interim basis.

Impressing in his short career, he will reportedly interview for the Plymouth job and is amongst the club's considerations.
