Ten Hag was widely expected to leave Old Trafford in the summer despite United's shock FA Cup win over rivals Manchester City, but with no suitable replacements, the Dutchman was kept in post.
But following a dismal start to the campaign in which the Red Devils have won just four of their first 14 games in all competitions, United opted to part ways with the former Ajax boss on Monday.
The likes of Xavi, Gareth Southgate and former striker Ruud van Nistelrooy were all linked with the now vacant managerial position at Old Trafford, but it is Sporting manager Ruben Amorim who looks set to be announced as Ten Hag's successor after the club issued a press release on Tuesday afternoon confirming that talks are advanced.
bet365's Sports and Trading expert Steve Freeth said: "We saw money flying in on a number of names immediately after Erik ten Hag's departure was confirmed, but that money has now dried up leaving us with no choice other than to pull the shutters down."
