Next Liverpool Manager

The identity of the next Liverpool manager has become one of the biggest talking points in English football following Jurgen Klopp's shock announcement in January that he will step down as boss of the Reds after nine years in charge, with 39-year-old Amorim becoming increasingly linked with the role.

Bayer Leverkusen manager and ex-Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso has been the favourite for the job ever since the news regarding Klopp broke, and appears the number one choice of the club's fanbase, but the six-time Champions League winners face stiff competition for his services from Bayern Munich.

With the Spain World Cup winner having also represented Bayern as a player and currently managing in the Bundesliga, with his Bayer Leverkusen side in line to win the club's first ever national league title this season, Alonso may view Bavaria as the ideal next step in this early stage of his coaching career.

Capped 14 times by Portugal as a player, Amorim has made a hugely impressive start to his managerial career in his homeland.

First taking charge of Casa Pia in the Portuguese third tier in 2018/19, Amorim was appointed Braga manager in September 2019 and delivered the domestic league cup only a few weeks after taking charge following a victory over Porto in the final.

At Braga for just six months, Amorim lost only two matches as manager of the club - succumbing home and away to Scottish giants Rangers in the round of 16 of the 2019/20 Europa League.

The former Benfica midfielder was quickly snapped up by Sporting Lisbon in March 2020, and inspirationally led the club to their first national league title in 19 years as well as the domestic league cup in the 2020/21 campaign.

Since then, Amorim has guided Sporting to a second domestic league cup crown in 2021/22 and the quarter-finals of the Europa League the following season after upsetting Mikel Arteta's Arsenal in the round of 16.

The 39-year-old is adaptable in his tactical approach, with his current Sporting side set up in a 3-4-3 formation with fluid movement and interchanging of positions in the final third.

A studious young coach with striking charisma, Amorim has drawn widespread plaudits for his man management skills and will to win in Portugal.
