Next England Manager Odds: Mauricio Pochettino backed for job after Chelsea exit

Argentine Mauricio Pochettino is the new favourite in our Next England Manager market as the build up to Euro 2024 continues.

After a strong end to the season as Chelsea boss, with the Blues finishing sixth in the Premier League to secure European football, Pochettino has departed Stamford Bridge by mutual consent.

This opens the door for Pochettino to be considered for a number of high-profile jobs, with uncertainty continuing to surround the future of England national team manager Gareth Southgate.

Should Southgate and the FA decide to part ways following the Euros in Germany this summer, former Tottenham and PSG manager Pochettino may be identified as an ideal successor given his experience at the top of the game and track record of utilising young players.

Will Gareth Southgate leave after Euro 2024?

It is expected that Gareth Southgate's reign in charge of the national team will reach its conclusion following Euro 2024.

Southgate has led his country to the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup and the final of Euro 2020, where they were beaten on penalties by Italy at Wembley.

England were then beaten by France in the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Cup, with Southgate deciding to stay on until the Euros following a period of reflection.

Despite reaching the latter stages of three tournaments, the consensus is that England have benefitted from favourable draws and when they have met the top teams, Southgate's tactical nous has not come to the fore.

Some England supporters believe that Southgate is failing to make the most of arguably the most exciting group of attacking players that the country has produced in a generation.

Failure to win this summer's European Championship, for which England are the pre-tournament favourites, will almost certainly result in Southgate's departure.

If England win Euro 2024, there is also a scenario that Southgate may decide to end his England tenure on a high.

Other candidates to be the next England manager

Newcastle United's Eddie Howe and former Chelsea and Brighton boss Graham Potter are joint-second in the betting, with the FA perhaps preferring to appoint an English manager to replace Southgate.

Current England Under 21s manager Lee Carsley is also amongst the frontrunners, having led the Young Lions to Euros success in Romania and Georgia last summer.

Two of the most successful foreign managers in Premier League history are also in the mix, with Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho touted as potential future England managers.
