Kemi Badenoch is the early favourite to be the next Conservative leader after Rishi Sunak resigned following his historic defeat at the general election.

Rishi Sunak’s brief tenure as leader of the Conservative Party came to an end after Labour secured a landslide win at the general election.

After David Cameron’s 11-year stint as Tory leader, the Conservatives have had four leaders since – Theresa May (three years), Boris Johnson (three years, two months), Liz Truss (49 days) and Rishi Sunak (one year, eight months) – and the party will hope for some stability in their next leader.

Kemi Badenoch, Tom Tugendhat and former Home Secretary Priti Patel all held onto their seat on what was an otherwise hugely disappointing night for the Tories, and they currently head the market.
