Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso is the current frontrunner to replace Thomas Tuchel as Bayern Munich manager at the end of the season.

Next Bayern Munich Manager

German giants Bayern Munich confirmed in February that Thomas Tuchel will leave his post as the club's manager at the end of the season, with the Bavarians currently trailing surprise package Bayer Leverkusen at the top of the Bundesliga by 10 points.

Bayern were also sensationally upset in the second round of the DFB-Pokal by third tier side FC Saarbrucken, leaving the club staring down the barrel of a first trophyless season in 12 years should they fail to win the Champions League.

This disappointing campaign has ultimately cost Tuchel's job, with the Bayern hierarchy now tasked with finding a suitable successor ahead of next season.

Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso seems the ideal candidate given his stunning success with the Bundesliga leaders this term, with the Spaniard having also represented Bayern as a player between 2014 and 2017.

Next Bayern Munich Manager Odds:

A serial champion during his playing days, winning four national league titles at club level for Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, as well as the World Cup and two Euros with Spain, Alonso was regarded as one of the finest midfielders of his generation.

Having played under some of the finest managers of all time as a player - including Jose Mourinho, Carlo Ancelotti and Pep Guardiola - Alonso began his own coaching career with Real Sociedad's B team in 2022 before taking on his first senior managerial role with Bayer Leverkusen in 2022.

Taking over a Bayer Leverkusen side which were sat second bottom of the Bundesliga table in October 2022, Alonso helped steer the club to a sixth placed finish in the league as well as the semi-finals of the Europa League before being knocked out by old boss Mourinho's Roma.

If Alonso's first half a season in charge of Bayer Leverkusen was impressive, his second term in the role has been nothing short of sensational.

Leverkusen stand on the brink of a first ever national league title having opened up a 10-point lead over Bayern Munich at the top of the Bundesliga, and also remain in contention to challenge for the DFB-Pokal and Europa League.

Alonso has been able to achieve this marked success at Bayer Leverkusen whilst employing a progressive, attacking style of play, with his swashbuckling side a joy to watch both domestically and in Europe.

It is little wonder why Bayern Munich chiefs are desperate to prise the Spaniard back to his former home of the Allianz Arena as the Bavarians get set to relinquish their Bundesliga crown for the first time in 11 years.
