Newmarket Horse Racing Tips for Thursday

The first day of Newmarket's July meeting takes place on Thursday and it's a cracking card, featuring the Princess of Wales's Stakes.

Here are the latest horse racing betting tips for Thursday's action at Newmarket from Racing Post tipster Graeme Rodway.

Thursday's Newmarket Horse Racing Betting Tips and Odds

13:50 – Portland @ 7/1
14:25 – Ain't Nobody @
15:00 – Palmar Bay @

13:50 – Portland @ 7/1

The Bahrain Trophy Stakes (13:50) kicks things off at Newmarket and Ancient Wisdom will be difficult to beat if he reproduces his top-class juvenile form. However, he has yet to show that in two outings this season and it's legitimate to question whether he has trained on.

He is still the most likely winner, but the best value bet might be the Aidan O'Brien-trained PORTLAND, who is better than he was able to show when well held on quick ground at Royal Ascot last month.

The son of Dubawi probably found the ground as quick as he would want that day and is better judged on his previous efforts on softer conditions, which include a good fourth behind Ancient Wisdom's stablemate Arabian Crown at Sandown and a victory in a Leopardstown Listed race.

That success came over 1m4f and he appeared well suited by the distance, so maybe the drop to 1m2f last time wasn't ideal, and there is a good chance that he can bounce back.

The step up to 1m5f looks certain to suit Portland and O'Brien does well in three-year-old staying races of this type.

14:25 – Ain't Nobody @ 9/2

The Kingdom Of Bahrain July Stakes (14:25) is up next and this looks like a good opportunity for AIN'T NOBODY to follow up his victory in the Windsor Castle Stakes at Royal Ascot last month.

The Kevin Ryan-trained colt proved his versatility with regards to ground that day as he had won his novice on good to soft at Carlisle and had no problem with good to firm at Royal Ascot. He was remarkably strong at the finish there, recording a good time, and shaping like 6f will suit.

He gets the chance to confirm that impression here as he goes up a furlong, and both his sire and dam stayed well, so there is every chance that he can improve for the greater stamina test.

Whistlejacket will probably be a warm order as he comes here with a big reputation, but Ain't Nobody achieved more than him by winning at Royal Ascot and there shouldn't be such a big price discrepancy between the two.

Strictly speaking Ain't Nobody has the better form.

15:00 – Palmar Bay @ 16/1

The Bet Boost At bet365 Handicap (15:00) is the big betting race of the day and PALMAR BAY is overpriced for Ralph Beckett and Ed Greatrex, who have a good record when teaming up.

Palmar Bay was good enough to beat last season's July Stakes winner Jasour when scoring over 5f at Salisbury last season and he followed up over 6f at the track on soft going next time.

He has run only twice since and both efforts came over 7f, a trip which seems to stretch him. He travelled powerfully before fading to finish third in a nursery on heavy going at Doncaster in October and pulled too hard to have any chance when last of nine at Sandown last month.

The return to a straight 6f in a big field like this might suit Palmar Bay as he is likely to settle better off what should be a strong pace, and the ground conditions have come right.

He has shown his best with cut in the ground and his dam Di Fede loved it when the mud was flying.
