Newcastle v Bournemouth: Tips, predictions & odds

Eddie Howe is hoping that the absence of two key strikers won’t stop Newcastle from overpowering his former club at St James’ Park.

A 2-0 defeat at Bournemouth in early November started Newcastle’s mid-season rot but now, with results having picked up nicely, Eddie Howe can avenge that loss and improve his side's top-four prospects.

Newcastle v Bournemouth tips and predictions

Newcastle to win @ 5/6

The Toon were terrible at Howe's old stomping ground three months back in a defeat which ended with Kieran Trippier involved in a row with disgruntled away supporters.

Those same fans are still uneasy every time Newcastle set foot on the pitch courtesy of a defence which has been shaky, but at least results are improving.

Newcastle welcome Bournemouth on the back of a four-match unbeaten run across two competitions, including an excellent 3-1 win at Aston Villa and a deserved if needlessly frantic 3-2 win at Nottingham Forest.

They have scored 20 goals in their last eight games, conceding 17.

The Premier League's famed entertainers are going back to the Kevin Keegan era with performances which have fans on the edge of their seats, with results now heading in the right direction.

The same cannot be said for Howe's former club, whose 2-0 win over Newcastle kick-started a fabulous seven-match unbeaten run featuring six wins to soar away from relegation danger.

Andoni Iraola had got some resolve into a team who would always play nice football but were accused of being a soft touch, though the feel-good factor is on the wane once again.

They have taken two points out of their last possible 15 and Saturday's 3-1 loss at Fulham really wasn't a good advert for them.

Howe should fancy this, even minus both Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson.

The Englishman pushed Bruno Guimaraes further forward at Forest and the Brazilian looked a real threat, while Anthony Gordon is quite capable of playing as the most-forward frontman. Having Harvey Barnes fit again is another major plus.

Bruno Guimaraes to score Anytime @ 6/1

With a record of three goals scored all season you can see why there are some big prices around Bruno Guimaraes finding the net at any time.

But when you bear in mind two of those goals came as recently as last Saturday when he played far further forward than earlier in the campaign, you've got to think the Brazilian is worth an interest.

Bruno scored two from two shots at the City Ground in more of a No.10 role with Lewis Miley sitting deeper.

With neither Wilson nor, we presume, Isak to call upon, nor, of course, Joelinton, again the onus will be on midfielders getting forward and Guimaraes demonstrably has an eye for goal.

Miguel Almiron, for example, is only 9/4 to score at any time yet the Paraguayan – also on the three-goal mark for the season – is surely no more trustworthy than his fellow South American.

Marcos Senesi to be booked @ 21/10

Newcastle enjoyed 63% possession in their 3-2 win at Forest as they attacked at will in a hugely entertaining game.

They would expect to be equally dominant at home to Bournemouth, who will be defending constantly.

Marcos Senesi has been booked more than any other Cherries player this season with six yellow cards to his name, incurring one suspension already.

The Argentine central defender, booked seven times last season, is a strong competitor who will be pulled around by a lively Toon frontline, and if anyone is going to tackle his way into Michael Salisbury's notebook he looks a good candidate.
