Esports: "Nelson" departs G2 Esports for Excel Esports ahead of LEC Spring Split

Former G2 Esports assistant coach Sng "Nelson" Yi-Wei has left the League of Legends outfit to take up the same position at LEC side Excel Esports ahead of the 2022 Spring Split.

Excel Esports are 11/4 to win their first match of this year's Spring Split, starting on Friday, against G2 Esports, who are 1/4 to prevail.

"Nelson" made positive start

Singapore-born coach "Nelson" had joined G2 Esports back in May last year, having been appointed in time for the Summer Split.

Under his stewardship, G2 managed to achieve a second-placed finish in the LEC Summer regular season but they fell apart in the playoffs.

They lost in round one of the knockout stage, falling to a 3-1 defeat against MAD Lions, who went on to win the Summer Split.

They then lost their losers' bracket encounter with Fnatic, ending their hopes of qualifying for the 2021 World Championship.

That was the first time since 2016 the organization had failed to qualify for Worlds and they have responded by making a number of roster changes.

Big changes at G2

Assistant coach "Nelson" is the latest to depart and will join up with an Excel Esports side who finished with a 7-11 record in both the Spring and Summer Splits last season.

And he brings with him plenty of coaching experience from stints at Hong Kong Attitude and LNG Esports among others.

Their roster is largely unchanged from last year, although they have acquired the services of top laner Finn "Finn" Wiestal.

Along with head coach Joey "Youngbuck" Steltenpool, "Nelson" will be eager to turn Excel's fortunes around and lead them to the LEC playoffs for the first time ever.

His team's Spring Split campaign will also start with a clash against his old organization G2 Esports on Friday.

Regarding their new assistant coach, Excel Esports wrote on Twitter: "Please welcome @nelson_sng as our new #LEC assistant coach!

"Time for some #LPL level drafts!"
