NBA Finals

Basketball

The joint-most successful team in NBA history alongside the Los Angeles Lakers, the Celtics have endured 16 years of near-misses, playing in more playoff games than any other team in history without winning a championship. Their last success came in 2008.

They were defeated by the Golden State Warriors in the NBA Finals two years ago, but Joe Mazzulla's team are heavily fancied to get the job done this time around.

Boston finished the regular season with a 64-18 win/loss record and became the 26th team in NBA history to achieve a tally of 64 wins. Interestingly, of the 25 teams that have accomplished the feat, only 15 have gone on to be crowned champions.

Earning top seed provided the Celtics with a favourable path to the NBA Finals but they made relatively easy work of their opponents, conceding a total of two matches to Miami Heat, Cleveland Cavaliers and Indiana Pacers.

Dallas Mavericks are vying for a second title to join their iconic 2011 crown and are 37/20 to come out on top in the seven-game series.

One member of their 2011 championship team was Jason Kidd, who is now leading this iteration of the Mavericks as head coach. Should his team triumph in the Finals, he will join an exclusive list of individuals to have won titles as a player and coach with the same team, including Pat Riley (Lakers) and Billy Cunningham (Sixers).

Inspired by the phenomenal Luka Doncic and boosted by the trades of forward P.J. Washington and center Daniel Gafford, Dallas concluded the season with a 16-4 record.

They continued their red-hot form into the post season, outclassing the Los Angeles Clippers before shutting down the dangerous offenses of the Oklahoma City Thunder and Minnesota Timberwolves.

The last four head-to-head meetings don't bode well for the Mavericks, with the Celtics boasting a four-game consecutive win streak which includes 138-110 and 119-110 victories in the regular season.

The Celtics are also a formidable force at TD Garden, losing just six times at home across the 2023/24 regular season and post season.

NBA Finals MVP odds

(Odds will display when market is available)

Jayson Tatum and Mavericks star Doncic head the betting in the 2024 NBA Finals MVP market.

Tatum has the edge given the Celtics are the favourites to triumph, but there's great interest as to how Doncic will fare in his first Finals and the five-time NBA All-Star was named Western Conference finals MVP following the win over Minnesota.

Celtics forward Jaylen Brown is third in the betting, while NBA's showpiece will also see Kyrie Irving make his highly-anticipated return to TD Garden.

Irving's acrimonious departure from Boston in 2019 left a bitter taste in the mouths of Celtics fans and the Mavericks guard has been greeted with jeers on every visit since.

Another player to encounter his former team in the Finals is Kristaps Porzingis, who left the Mavs in 2022 after being traded to the Washington Wizards.
