NBA Draft 2024 Odds: Zaccharie Risacher favourite to be first pick

There's a new look to the NBA Draft this year with the first round being held over two days and at two different locations in New York.

The first round will take place on Wednesday night at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, while the following day the teams will move to ESPN's Seaport District Studios in Manhattan for round two.

The Atlanta Hawks got lucky in the draft lottery and hold the first overall pick despite having had only a 3% chance of winning it. The Washington Wizards and Houston Rockets are due to pick second and third.

Last year's first overall pick, Victor Wembanyama, has had a fantastic first season, being named the NBA Rookie of the Year. He was the first French player to be taken first overall but there's a good chance another player from France will follow in his footsteps.

Let's take a look at the top prospects in the 2024 NBA Draft.

NBA Draft 2024

Zaccharie Risacher

Zaccharie Risacher has a strong chance of benefiting from the success of Wembanyama and becoming the second successive French player to be taken first in the NBA Draft.

The 6ft 8in small forward was born in Spain when his father was playing pro basketball for Malaga, but grew up in Lyon.

He was the second-youngest player to win the Euro Cup Rising Star award and has played for ASVEL and JL Bourg in the French League.

He showed up well in the LNB play-offs, suggesting that his game will translate well to the NBA.

Risacher's potential is not thought to be as high as that of Wembanyama, but in a draft that may be missing a real superstar this year he looks one of the safer bets on the board to be a success in the association.

Donovan Clingan

Donovan Clingan could be in consideration to be taken with the first pick and the 7ft 2in center arrives at the draft having won two national championships with the UConn Huskies over the last two seasons.

In his college career he played 74 games with an average of 9.8 points per game (13.0 in 2023/24), 6.4 rebounds per game and 1.0 assist per game.

His wingspan of almost 7ft 7in makes him an excellent rim protector, shot blocker and rebounder. He improved tremendously in his second season and is a great physical presence at both ends of the court but needs to sharpen up on his free-throw percentage, which was below 60% last season.

Alex Sarr

Center Alex Sarr has been strongly linked to the Washington Wizards, who have the second pick in the draft.

Another French player with massive potential, the 7ft tall 19-year-old from Bordeaux spent the last season playing in Australia for the Perth Wildcats.

A tremendous athlete, he is a hard prospect for scouts to ignore with his blend of speed, agility and height. His older brother, Olivier, already plays in the NBA with the Oklahoma City Thunder.

He has been compared to Evan Mobley of the Cleveland Cavaliers, who was taken with the third overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft.

Stephon Castle

With the University of Connecticut having won back-to-back national titles, it's no surprise to see another of the Huskies' top players expected to go near the top of the draft along with Clingan.

Guard Stephon Castle has become an increasing threat offensively and looks capable of swiftly making the transition to the NBA.

At almost 6ft 6in, he has superstar potential at guard after playing only one season of college basketball.

The playmaker can get on hot streaks as a shooter but needs to work on his three-point shots. He is something of a wild-card in the draft with little information doing the rounds about his likely destination.

Reed Sheppard

Kentucky guard Reed Sheppard is seen as a solid pick. He's small at just under 6ft 2in but makes up for that with tenacity and excellent decision-making.

He won several Freshman of the Year awards last season after averaging 12.5 points per game for the Wildcats.

Despite his excellent intangibles, teams are likely to be looking for a more imposing physical presence early in the draft.
