Learn more about 2023 World Matchplay winner, 'The Asp', Nathan Aspinall.
Nathan Aspinall has notched up two PDC Darts ranking title victories in his career to date, the 2019 UK Open and more recently, the 2023 World Matchplay.
‘The Asp’ was in inspired form in Blackpool last July, producing the best darts of his career as he captured what many perceive to be the second most prestigious title that the sport has to offer.
He comprehensively beat Johnny Clayton in the showpiece final, reeling off 11 consecutive legs en-route to a dominating 18-6 triumph, landing a number of sensational checkouts along the way, including a scintillating 170, bullseye finish.
It was back in 2019 however that the Stockport ace captured his maiden ranking title, overcoming the likes of Gerwyn Price and Rob Cross as he took to the winners circle for the first time at the UK Open in Minehead.
Aspinall took out another stunning 170 checkout to secure an 11-5 victory over Cross in the final and in the process, propel himself into the Order of Merit top 16 for the first time.
He has since reached four other ranking finals – the 2020 Premier League, 2022 World Grand Prix, 2022 Grand Slam of Darts and, of course, the 2023 World Matchplay.
As well as winning the 2023 World Matchplay and the UK Open, Nathan Aspinall has also tasted televised success in the US Darts Masters - triumphing at the 2019 staging of the event in Las Vegas, Nevada.
He registered a 106.70 average as he beat Michael Smith 8-4 in the final at the iconic Mandalay Bay, having previously scored three-figure averages in his successes over Peter Wright (104.21) and Rob Cross (100.37).
Other notable tournament wins for ‘The Asp’ have come in the PDC Development Tour (2015), PDC Challenge Tour (2017) as well as five Players Championships victories in 2018, 2020 (x2) and 2022 (x2).
Nathan Aspinall is the currently ranked number 11 in the PDC's Order of Merit.
His triumph at the 2023 World Matchplay helped elevate 'The Asp' into the top four for the first time, but he has since slipped back down the rankings.
Sadly, unlike a lot of other players on the PDC Tour, there's no intriguing backstory or inspirational tale to Nathan Aspinall's nickname.
The 2023 World Matchplay champion simply calls himself 'The Asp', which is, of course, a shortened version of his surname.
‘The Asp’ walks out to ‘Mr Brightside’, by the Killers - a song that always attracts a hugely positive reaction from fans.
The Stockport-thrower first used the song at the World Championship in December 2018, having previously walked out to Depeche Mode’s ‘Can’t Get Enough’.
Nathan Aspinall is 33-years-old and will turn 34 on 15th July, 2025.
He made his TV debut in the final of the 2015 World Youth Championship, aged 23, where he was edged out 6-5 by German Max Hopp in a dramatic final leg decider.
