Since NASCAR began, a total of 36 different have won the Cup Series championship, of which 17 have claimed the title more than once.

Richard Petty, Dale Earnhardt and Jimmie Johnson are the most successful NASCAR Cup Series drivers with seven titles each. The latter, Johnson, triumphed in five successive years between 2006 and 2010.

The competitive nature of NASCAR is reflected by five different champions in the previous six seasons, with only Joey Logano taking two titles in that stretch.
