Horse Racing - Racing: Mullins mulls Galopin Des Champs trip

What trip the impressive-looking Galopin Des Champs races over next season is one of the big talking points remaining from last week's Cheltenham Festival.

He is currently 5/1 for the Ryanair Chase and 4/1 for the Cheltenham Gold Cup, while his trainer Willie Mullins has even talked about potentially dropping him back to two miles.

Punchestown provdies pointers

But with Mullins as yet undecided, Punchestown could provide punters with a clue as to what trip he will race over next season.

The 2021 Martin Pipe-winner has shown his versatility regarding trip having all but put the race to bed before taking a tumble at the last in the 2m4f Turners Novices’ Chase at this year’s Festival.

Meanwhile, he has also won two chases at around 2m5f in Ireland and took a 3m Grade 1 novice hurdle at Punchestown last year.

However, it is the speed with which he jumps and how aggressive his running style is that has Mullins considering dropping him back to shorter distances.

Mullins making up his mind

Mullins is as yet undecided as to what trip to campaign his star over meaning the race he runs in at next month's Punchestown Festival could provide a major clue.

"He can go out or come back in trip - I think he's one we could do anything with," Mullins said.

"He was jumping too big and that's because he probably wasn't going fast enough in the Turners. We have to sort that out, but I'm sure we will."
