The 2025 F1 season begins in Australia on 16th March and Racing Post's Phil Agius expects a new winner in the drivers championship after Max Verstappen won in each of the last four seasons.
The campaign begins with the highest expectations for several years. While Red Bull and Max Verstappen have dominated the sport in recent seasons, the final year before a major regulations change in 2026 is expected to be hard-fought from start to finish.
The odds anticipate a changing of the guard with Verstappen only second in the betting this time as last season's runner-up Lando Norris is favourite to secure his first world championship success.
McLaren won the constructors championship for the first time since 1998 last season, and hopes are high for Norris and his Australian teammate Oscar Piastri, who was fourth last year.
Verstappen has a new partner in New Zealander Liam Lawson, but the biggest driver change of the off-season saw seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton leave Mercedes after 12 years to join Ferrari.
Hamilton will team up with Charles Leclerc at the Italian team, while his seat at Mercedes has been filled by teenage prodigy Andrea Kimi Antonelli, who forms a quick driver pairing with George Russell.
Lando Norris to win outright - 7/4
Some would argue that Norris should be heading into the 2025 season with one world title already under his belt after the British driver failed to maximise his car's potential in the second half of the 2024 campaign.
Norris arguably had the fastest car on the grid at more races than Verstappen last season, but when the defending champion's pace cooled off after a fast start, the McLaren man did not earn as many points as might have been expected for a variety of reasons.
Slow starts after qualifying well, costly penalties and at times simple bad luck combined to leave Norris 63 points behind Verstappen at the end of the season despite the excitement crested by his run of three wins in August and September.
Norris took pole position for seven of the last 12 races in 2024, but won only three of them. The pace he showed should have proved to the British driver that he has the talent to succeed. It's worth remembering that he went into last season without an F1 race victory to his name and last year's brief run as a title contender should have done wonders for his self-belief.
Psychology aside, the McLaren looked good in the three days of pre-season testing in Bahrain, showing some particularly impressive long-run pace in race simulations compared to its rivals.
Rather than resting on their laurels, the Woking-based team have opted for some aggressive design changes this year and the early results are positive.
Fighting head-to-head with Verstappen on the track comes with inherent dangers of collisions and penalties, but there's a decent chance that Norris will have the pace to stay clear of trouble this year.
Piastri is an interesting each-way option if the McLaren is as strong as expected, while Verstappen, Russell and both Ferrari drivers are expected to be in the title hunt too.
Kimi Antonelli to win a race - 6/4
Andrea Kimi Antonelli is just 18-years-old but has been fast-tracked into F1 by Mercedes after a sparkling karting and junior racing career.
Antonelli was only sixth in his sole Formula 2 season last year, with two race wins, but has been tipped as the next big thing for a while and Mercedes boss Toto Wolff is clearly trying to emulate the success Red Bull had when they took a chance on the young Verstappen.
The Italian's inexperience showed when he crashed Russell's Mercedes in first practice for last year's Italian Grand Prix at Monza but Wolff was still beaming about the pace the youngster had shown before the incident.
There will likely be plenty more rookie errors to come, but Antonelli has the talent to shine on rare occasions and a race win in his first season can't be ruled out with 24 chances to succeed.
Isack Hadjar to beat Yuki Tsunoda (season match bet) - 11/4
Another of the six rookie drivers in the 2025 field is Frenchman Isack Hadjar, who joins Yuki Tsunoda in the renamed Racing Bulls team (formerly RB and Alpha Tauri) and the youngster looks a big price to upstage his senior colleague.
Tsunoda was 12th in the championship last year with 30 points, but was passed over for the Red Bull drive that went to Lawson and may find another youngster negatively affecting his career path.
Hadjar missed out on a chance to win the F2 title last season when he stalled on the grid at the start of the final feature race but he clearly has talent and could go well in his first season.
McLaren to win Constructors Championship - 1/1
McLaren finished second and fourth in the drivers championship last year but that was enough for them to win the team title and they should be capable of hanging on to that crown.
Norris and Piastri are both capable of keeping the points flowing, while Red Bull was pretty much a one-man team last season with Verstappen scoring 437 of their 589 points and the Dutchman may not get a huge amount more help from Lawson this year.
Ferrari would be a huge threat if their car has around the same pace as McLaren's given their strong driver pairing, but the departed Carlos Sainz Jr. was no slouch either and another second place may be the best they can manage.
