MotoGP Qatar Grand Prix: Tips, Predictions & Odds

MotoGP has provided some sensational track action over the last few seasons and the 2024 championship promises plenty more excitement, with 21 races scheduled between now and November.

Last year's title race went down to the wire before Francesco 'Pecco' Bagnaia fended off the challenge of Jorge Martin to win his second successive championship.

Bagnaia will be looking to make a positive start to his hat-trick bid in the first race of the year in Qatar on Sunday.

However, Martin will be determined to get the better of the Italian this time around, while six-time champion Marc Marquez begins a new era after leaving Honda to join Ducati.

Setting the scene…

The first F1 race of the season didn't quite produce the challenge to Max Verstappen that many were hoping for but there is rarely any shortage of overtaking or adrenaline-filled action in MotoGP races.

The field for the 2024 season has a great look to it with multiple champion Marquez setting out on a new adventure on the powerful Ducati bike, while last season's title protagonists Bagnaia and Martin resume their rivalry and a hot young talent in Pedro Acosta has arrived on the scene.

The stage is set for another awesome championship battle and it starts in Lusail on Sunday.

Francesco Bagnaia @ 1/1

Francesco Bagnaia has become the man to beat in MotoGP over the last two seasons, winning back-to-back championships while the sport's former undisputed top man, Marc Marquez, missed huge amounts of track action due to multiple injuries.

Pre-season testing suggests Bagnaia won't give up his crown easily, as he has been on the pace throughout the early action and set a record lap time at the circuit for the opening race in Qatar.

This race was not in its usual place in the calendar as the season-opening event last season due to track improvement work taking place at this time last year and it was instead run as the penultimate round of the year.

That means bettors have to go back only two races for a form guide to this race and that certainly suggests that Marquez made the right decision in abandoning Honda to jump on a Ducati machine.

Ducatis filled the first six places in qualifying in Qatar last season, led by pole-man Luca Marini and they also took the first five slots in the Sprint Race, with Jorge Martin coming home ahead of Fabio Di Giannantonio, with Marini third.

In the Grand Prix, an all-Ducati podium was therefore no surprise as Di Giannantonio claimed the first victory of his career, ahead of Bagnaia in second and Marini in third.

Bagnaia is still seeking his first GP win in Qatar after going out of the 2022 race following a collision and finishing third to Maverick Vinales in 2021, but he won at Lusail on his way to a Moto2 championship success in 2018.

His testing times suggest he has found the key to success at this track and the Italian should prove hard to beat on the opening weekend.

Enea Bastianini @ 6/1

After finishing a promising third in the 2022 championship, Enea Bastianini's 2023 campaign was ruined by injuries.

A broken shoulder suffered in the Sprint Race at the opening event of the season caused him to miss the first five rounds, before a crash at the Catalan Grand Prix left him with ankle and hand fractures and led to him missing a further four races.

He was able to return and showcase his speed with a victory in Malaysia, though, and he has shown up well enough in pre-season testing to have a strong chance of making the podium in his first race of 2024.

Bastianini won in Qatar in 2022 and was an impressive second in the recent Lusail test. Given he is relatively stronger in race conditions than over a single lap, he should be able to score plenty of points in the opener.

Pedro Acosta @ 40/1

While Bagnaia is MotoGP's man of the moment and Marquez is the sport's most recent legend following the retirement of Valentino Rossi, Pedro Acosta has the potential to join the list of the sport's top riders as he prepares for his first MotoGP race.

The Spanish sensation won the MotoGP Rookies Cup in 2019, the Moto 3 title in 2020 and the Moto 2 championship last season, earning himself a spot in the MotoGP field riding a KTM machine for the Tech3 Gas Gas team this season.

The rookie was second overall in the Sepang pre-season test and has a chance to show the whole field what he is capable of in Qatar.
