The MotoGP world championship seems to take a dramatic turn with each race and more thrills and spills can be expected in this weekend’s Grand Prix of Indonesia.
World champion Francesco Bagnaia won the sprint race at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, but then crashed out in the main race.
His team-mate Enea Bastianini muscled past championship leader Jorge Martin in a controversial move to win, but Martin holds a 24-point advantage at the top of the overall standings.
Jorge Martin to win - 5/2
Jorge Martin has still won only two of the 14 grands prix this season but his sprint race success and consistency have taken him clear at the top of the standings.
Rival Francesco 'Pecco' Bagnaia crashing out in the main race at Misano last week after winning the sprint meant that Martin stretched his lead after finishing second in both races.
Martin will be sore that he didn't pick up a third Sunday win of the season as he was leading on the final lap when Enea Bastianini aggressively barged past, forcing him off the track.
Several of his rivals thought the Italian should have been penalised for the move, but no punishment was forthcoming from the stewards and the Ducati rider picked up his second win of the season following his Silverstone success.
It was still a strong weekend for Martin, as he bounced back after his awful tactical mistake in the main race in the previous round, when he pitted for wet-weather tyres only for the track to stay dry.
Martin goes well at the Indonesian circuit, winning the sprint race there last year before crashing out from the lead of the grand prix.
Bagnaia inherited the win that day after finishing only eighth in the sprint, but he has qualified only sixth and 13th there in the last two seasons, which should be a concern for his potential backers.
Bagnaia has failed to finish two of the last three races and is becoming harder to trust at short prices.
Enea Bastianini each-way - 6/1
Enea Bastianini has been on the podium at four of the last five races and the Ducati man should be hard to keep out of the top three again in Indonesia.
The Italian has regained third place in the championship by one point from Marc Marquez, who had won the previous two rounds for the Gresini team.
He didn't make much of an impression in this race last year, finishing seventh in the sprint and eighth in the main race after qualifying only 11th, but he has finished in the top five at 13 of this season's 14 races and should be in the mix again as he targets back-to-back wins.
A late night in the garage analysing data was credited for leading to his Misano win and that impressive attitude, coupled by the ruthless streak he showed on the last lap of the race, make him difficult to count out.
Pedro Acosta each-way - 22/1
There are only two years of track form to work with this week as the previous race in Indonesia was way back in 1997, so MotoGP rookie Pedro Acosta does not have the experience deficit at this track that he does at many others.
The young Spaniard raced at the track in the Moto2 categories in both 2022 and 2023 and scored a dominant win on his way to the championship last season.
Acosta has had an up-and-down first year at the top level, with an early podium finish followed by a quieter spell, but he was back in the mix with third place in Aragon and in the last round at Misano he was fifth in the sprint before crashing in the main race.
He showed enough pace to suggest he could be in the hunt for a podium finish at a track he enjoys.
Francesco Bagnaia - 2/1
Jorge Martin - 5/2
Marc Marquez - 11/4
Enea Bastianini - 6/1
Maverick Vinales - 16/1
Brad Binder - 20/1
Pedro Acosta - 22/1
