Four races into the 2024 MotoGP season and two-time reigning champion Francesco Bagnaia has already won twice, but it is Spaniard Jorge Martin who is out in front in the standings.
Bagnaia has outperformed fellow Ducati rider Martin in the races themselves, but his rival has proved more adept in the sprint races to carry a 17-point lead into the action on the Bugatti Circuit at Le Mans.
Martin won the sprint race at Le Mans 12 months ago but had to settle for second place in the Grand Prix itself behind surprise winner Marco Bezzecchi, while Bagnaia crashed out on lap four following a collision with Maverick Vinales.
One thing seems certain, Ducati are likely to provide the winning rider, having done so in 12 of the last 13 races.
Francesco Bagnaia - 13/5
Bagnaia made it two win from four races this season with victory in Spain last time out and it is only his form in the shorter sprint races which means that he is not currently out in the lead in the overall standings.
The weekend in Jerez showed exactly why that is the case, as the Italian crashed out on lap two in the sprint race, only to rebound to claim a superb GP victory by holding off Marc Marquez and recording the fastest lap of the race in the process.
His retirement from the Portuguese Grand Prix was the only time in his last 11 races that he has failed to finish on the podium, so not only is Bagnaia fast, he is consistent in making sure that his points tally keep growing.
The main factor of concern is the record that the two-time world champion has at Le Mans, with the 27-year-old having crashed out of each of the last two French Grands Prix.
Particularly galling for Bagnaia would have been the fact that he qualified on pole in both 2022 and 2023 and he is sure to be highly motivated to make up for those failures by challenging for the race victory this time around.
Marc Marquez - 11/4
Having enjoyed all of his success to date on a Honda, Marc Marquez made the decision to leave for Ducati ahead of this season and his performance in Jerez last time out suggests that he made the right call.
The six-time world champion, now a relative veteran at 31 years of age, finished down in 16th place in Portugal before crashing out on lap 10 of the Grand Prix of the Americas.
However, the Spaniard pushed Bagnaia all the way in front of a huge home crowd and gave warning to the other riders that he is far from finished in his bid to draw level with the seven titles won by the legendary Valentino Rossi.
Less than four tenths of a second separated Bagnaia and Marquez at Jerez and the latter will hope to use that performance as a springboard for similar rides in the races still to come.
With no fewer than 85 Grands Prix victories on his record, Marquez undoubtedly has the pedigree to challenge at the head of the field and he already has three French Grand Prix wins on his CV.
Marco Bezzecchi - 12/1
Bezzecchi endured a tough start to the new season but was back to something like his best at the Spanish Grand Prix, coming home in third place - just over 3.5 seconds back from the scrap between Bagnaia and Marquez.
The 25-year-old Italian was third over the line as Ducati locked out the first five places at Jerez and Bezzecchi will be eager to build on a very promising ride.
Last season he won three times, taking the chequered flag in Argentina and Indonesia, as well as in France, eventually ending the campaign third in the riders’ standings, with only Bagnaia and Martin ahead of him.
Back at the scene of one of his three MotoGP victories to date, the Rimini native should be boosted by a little bit of extra confidence which could catapult him right into the mix for Grand Prix victory.
Jorge Martin - 9/4
Francesco Bagnaia - 13/5
Marc Marquez - 11/4
Maverck Vinales - 6/1
Pedro Acosta - 11/1
