Motherwell v Partick Thistle: Prediction, Tips and Odds

A win would see current Group G leaders Motherwell sail into the second round of the Scottish League Cup and they will be confident of securing those vital three points when they welcome Partick Thistle to Fir Park in the competition’s sole Sunday game.

Championship outfit Thistle suffered a shock 3-2 loss to League Two Clyde last time out and anything less than a win at Fir Park would see them eliminated, with even victory not ensuring their place in the next round.

With plenty on the line, it promises to be an exciting clash when the Steelmen host the Jags on Sunday.

Motherwell to win - 8/11

Depending on Clyde’s result on Saturday, a draw could be enough to see Motherwell through to the second round as group winners. However, Stuart Kettlewell is unlikely to want to take that risk and will go all out for three points on Sunday.

The Well were clinical when dispatching Clyde 3-1 last weekend and they should build on that against Thistle, who will be low on confidence following their 3-2 loss to the same opponents on Tuesday, a result which was made worse when first-choice goalkeeper David Mitchell was forced off with an injury.

Without their normal keeper, a tough task has been made even harder for Partick, who look unlikely to enjoy their trip to Fir Park. Motherwell have lost just one of their last five competitive matches on their own patch, earning a comfortable 3-0 victory over Edinburgh City in their sole Fir Park outing this term.

The Steelmen have lost just two of their last eight meetings with the Jags, winning four times in that run, and should prove too strong for Partick, who have won only two of their last 11 away games and are a division below their hosts.

Both teams to score and over 2.5 goals - 10/11

With Partick needing a win and Motherwell aiming for three points, an exciting game could unfold at Fir Park.

Thistle are the highest scoring side in Group G, having netted 11 times in their three matches so far, and will bring plenty of attacking threat to the clash. The Jags had six different scorers when thrashing Edinburgh 6-0 earlier in the group stage, suggesting they have the options to hurt Motherwell on Sunday.

All three of Partick’s League Cup games this term have seen at least five goals, while two of the Well’s three have gone over 2.5. Those statistics, coupled with the fact the two sides could each do with a win, hint that the goals could flow at Fir Park, with both teams expected to contribute to the tally.

Both teams have scored in eight of Motherwell’s last 11 competitive games and in four of their last five at home, while the same bet has landed in seven of the Jags’ last eight competitive matches.

Goals are certainly on the agenda in this League Cup clash, with both sides expected to play their part in a scintillating Scottish spectacle.

Moses Ebiye to score any time - 8/5

Motherwell’s main man last season was undoubtedly Theo Bair, who scored 15 goals, provided six assists and was named the club’s player of the season. His form did not go unnoticed, however, and he completed a move to Ligue 1 side Auxerre last week.

Replacing the goals of Bair will be key to any success Motherwell have this term, but they may already have the answer to fill the sizable void the Canadian left in the form of Moses Ebiye.

The Nigerian forward arrived from Norwegian outfit Aelesund in March but took time to settle, making only six appearances last term. He scored twice in those limited minutes, though, and showed glimpses of promise.

After some more time for Ebiye to settle, he finally looks ready to properly announce himself to the Fir Park faithful. The Nigerian enjoyed an excellent pre-season, scoring in all three of Motherwell’s games and netting four goals in total.

Ebiye opened the scoring against Clyde last time out and should get the nod up front once more. Facing a side who shipped three to League Two opposition last time out and who will likely be without their first-choice goalkeeper, the Nigerian forward could help himself to at least one goal at Fir Park on Sunday.
