The former Barcelona and Liverpool player represented his country at four different World Cups during his career.
He occasionally played as a centre-back but he appeared more often as a defensive midfielder for his country.
Mascherano played a total of 20 matches in World Cup football and, with 147 caps, he is second on the all-time appearances list for Argentina.
Former Brazil captain Dunga is second on the list of players with the most World Cup appearances since 1990.
Dunga played in three World Cups and was the winning captain as Brazil beat Italy on penalties in the 1994 final.
2010 World Cup winner Sergio Busquets made 17 World Cup appearances for Spain, while Lothar Matthaus and Gilberto Silva complete the top five.
There is also a place on the list for the likes of Xabi Alonso and Patrick Vieira.
