Most penalties scored in the UEFA Champions League since 1992

In 1992, the European Cup was reformatted and rebranded to the UEFA Champions League, with the competition gradually expanding ever since.

Below we look at the players to have scored the most penalties in the competition since 1992.

Ties are ordered by youngest player first.

Robert Lewandowski - 19 penalties

As the scorer of more than 100 UEFA Champions League goals it's no surprise to see Robert Lewandowski top the pile here.

While he's always been a fantastic penalty taker, his record in Europe is particularly impressive, scoring 19 of his 20 penalties in the UEFA Champions League.

Cristiano Ronaldo - 19 penalties

And sharing top spot with Lewandowski is none other than - who else? - Cristiano Ronaldo. Despite scoring a whopping 140 UEFA Champions League goals - 37 more than Lewandowski, Ronaldo has only scored the same number of penalties as the Pole.

Lionel Messi - 18 goals

Even as the greatest player of all time and one of the greatest goalscorers to have ever played the game, Lionel Messi's penalty record was decidedly average.

Nevertheless, the Argentinian did find the net 18 times from the spot over his career, with 16 for Barcelona and two for Paris Saint-Germain.

Sergio Aguero - 11 penalties

A somewhat surprising entry on this list considering Sergio Aguero only managed 41 goals in the UEFA Champions League, but more than a quarter came from the penalty spot.

Ruud van Nistelrooy - 10 penalties

One of the most prolific goalscorers of his generation, Ruud van Nistelrooy was also deadly from 12 yards, scoring from the spot for PSV Eindhoven, Manchester United and Real Madrid.

Harry Kane - 10 penalties

Despite his time with Tottenham restricting his UEFA Champions League numbers, Harry Kane has made up for lost time since his move to Germany.

A phenomenal penalty taker, who's scored around 90% of his career penalties, Kane has added six more for Bayern following his four for Tottenham.

Luis Figo - 10 penalties

Despite sharing a pitch with the likes of Raul, Ronaldo and Zinedine Zidane, Luis Figo took his fair share of penalties for Real Madrid over the years, inheriting the duties from Fernando Hierro.

All in all, Figo stepped up 13 times for Real Madrid, scoring with 10.

Jorginho - nine penalties

Perhaps another surprising entry on the list considering his lack of goals in the competition; indeed, all nine of Jorginho's goals in the UEFA Champions League have come from the spot.

His first was for Napoli, with six for Chelsea and two since his move to Arsenal.

Thomas Muller - eight penalties

Despite losing primary penalty-taking responsibilities to Robert Lewandowski following his arrival, Thomas Muller has still stepped up a total of 11 times for Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League, scoring eight.

Erling Haaland - eight penalties

It may not be too hasty to say that in Erling Haaland we're seeing one of the greatest goalscorers and finishers to have ever played the game.

As such, it's not a huge surprise to see him find the bottom corner almost every time he steps up from 12 yards, and he's certain to climb this list over the years.
