Most iconic darts quotes of all time

We highlight some of the most memorable darts quotes of all time, including words of wisdom from the likes of Phil Taylor, Michael van Gerwen and Wayne Mardle, as well, of course, as some absolute beautiful from 'the voice of darts' himself, the late great, Sid Waddell.

Sid Waddell

"Jockey Wilson... what an athlete!"

- Where to start than this beauty from the iconic darts commentator, Sid Waddell. Of course, he was referring to the Scottish legend Jockie Wilson - a two-time World Darts Champion - but for those who aren't aware, Jockie was also famed for his relentless beer drinking and chain smoking antics whilst toeing the oche.

"There's no one quicker than these two tungsten tossers!"

- Another belter from Sid Waddell - it's unknown as to which two players he was referring to when he came out with this stupendous line, but we're sure they would have taken it in good heart.

"Look at the man go, its like trying to stop a water buffalo with a pea-shooter."

- Another classic from the Geordie, making reference to Phil Taylor's demolition of Terry Jenkins in the early 2000s.

Luke Littler

"I practice for like, half an hour to 45 minutes a day."

- It's fair to say some people are just born with a god-given talent. 2025 World Darts Champion Luke Littler reveals his 'intense' 45-minute daily practice schedule.

Phil Taylor

"The games you lose are the games you always remember."

- No player on earth comes close to Phil Taylor's remarkable haul of 16 World Darts Championships, and his elite mentality is summed up by this quote.

"People keep asking me how did I celebrate? I tell them I stood with my trousers and pants down trying to have a wee while a big bearded bloke stared at me"

- Phil Taylor's celebrations after winning a landmark 16th world title were put on ice after being summonsed for a drug test.

Bobby George

"Darts in 1965, well you used to hit a 180 and get a free pint in the pub! With those darts though, you needed it."

- The flamboyant Bobby George explained that the size of the barrels on the darts were so big in the 1960s, that it took a real Herculean effort to score a maximum.

Adrian Lewis

"Listen, I am the best player in the world!"

- Back-to-back World Darts Champion Adrian Lewis lacked no confidence when delivering his thoughts on his standing in the PDC's Order of Merit after becoming the first player to successfully defend their maiden Alexandra Palace crown back in 2012.

Wayne Mardle

"One man misses, does the other man get? I have never seen the like. Come on Bully Boy... Yes!, Yes! Double 12 - that is the most amazing game of darts you will ever see in your life! I can't spake, I can't spake!"

- Wayne Mardle dropped one of the most memorable 20 seconds of commentary in darts history - overseeing the greatest leg of all-time as Michael Smith landed tungsten perfection moments after Michael van Gerwen had wired double 12 for his own perfect leg, in the 2023 World Darts Championship final.

"I'm p****d off, I lost. I don't like losing, I am f****d off - if you get me in 10 minutes I will be alright, but they shouldn't interview me now. Are you interviewing me or not? We're not live now, why wasn't I told - I should have been told."

- Who would have thought 'Hawaii 501' would one day go on to forge himself a stellar broadcasting career after dropping 'F-bombs' galore during an interview with a Dutch TV channel. Wayne Mardle, of course, didn't realise they were live at the time... his face was an absolute picture.

Michael van Gerwen

"Peter (Wright) played crap. I can have a big mouth now, but with a 92 average you need to shut your mouth and get back to the practice board."

- World Darts Champion Michael van Gerwen was pulling absolutely no punches after showing his class on the board with an emphatic victory over Peter Wright, after the Scotsman had launched a verbal attack on the Dutchman ahead of their 2023 showdown.

Eric Bristow

"I was never going to be a Jimmy White, who would choke every time. I was going to win it. I was too good not to win it."

- Five-time World Darts Champion Eric Bristow was never one to lack in self-confidence and belief, as proven by this quote.
