Most Famous Boxing Gyms in the World

Across the world, boxing gyms serve a greater purpose than simply developing champions.

Of course, we all know that they fine-tune the world’s best fighters, but, for others, they also act as gateways to safer, healthier lives.

In these gyms, men and women - often volunteers - dedicate countless hours to teaching not just the sweet science, but also discipline, self-respect, and structure.

For many, boxing gyms are havens - for a rare few, they’re launchpads to greatness.

Some gyms have become legendary breeding grounds for fighters who would carve their names into boxing’s Mount Rushmore.

But which of these stand tallest?

We take a look at the six greatest boxing gyms on planet earth.

No.6 - Wincobank Gym

(Sheffield, United Kingdom)

Known more widely as the Ingle Gym, this unassuming Sheffield facility helped revolutionise British boxing.

It was the brainchild of Brendan Ingle - boxing’s own Gandalf - a maverick trainer who preached rhythm, movement, and unpredictability over brute force.

Ingle’s teachings gave rise to some of Britain’s most skilful and charismatic fighters, none more so than "Prince" Naseem Hamed.

With his hands-down style, supernatural reflexes, and knockout power, Hamed captivated the world and brought the Ingle style to the global stage.

But Naz wasn’t the only one. Johnny Nelson became a long-reigning cruiserweight champion, Herol Graham was perhaps the best British fighter never to win a world title, and Junior Witter and Kell Brook both claimed world championships in the years that followed.

Wincobank didn’t just produce fighters, it crafted individualists.

Ingle believed boxing was an art form, and his gym remains a gallery of unconventional greatness.

No.5 - Wild Card Boxing Club

(Los Angeles, United States of America)

Freddie Roach’s Wild Card Boxing Club is a second home to dozens of world-class fighters, and a warzone for those who step inside its ring.

Housed in a nondescript area of Hollywood, the gym has become one of the most iconic training hubs in modern boxing.

At the heart of it all is Roach himself, the former pro turned master strategist.

His crown jewel is Manny Pacquiao, a whirling dervish of speed and power whom Roach helped turn into an eight-weight world champion and global superstar.

But Wild Card’s influence doesn’t stop there.

James Toney, the defensive wizard, rebuilt his career within its walls, whilst the likes of Amir Khan, Miguel Cotto, and Julio César Chávez Jr. all sought Roach’s guidance and left as better fighters.

No.4 - Catskill Boxing Club

(Catskill, New York, United States of America)

Tucked away in a sleepy upstate town, the Catskill Boxing Club doesn’t scream history, but few gyms have had a greater impact on the heavyweight division.

Under the watchful eye of the enigmatic Cus D’Amato, the gym became a sanctuary for troubled youth and a breeding ground for greatness.

Mike Tyson, the most famous of D’Amato’s protégés, was shaped here from a raw teenager into the youngest heavyweight champion in history.

Before Tyson, D’Amato guided Floyd Patterson, another troubled youth, to the world heavyweight title, making him the youngest champion of his era and the first man to regain the title after losing it.

Also among the graduates was José Torres, a classy and intelligent light-heavyweight who later became New York’s boxing commissioner.

All three were moulded not only physically but psychologically - Cus taught them to fight with their minds as much as their fists.

No.3 - Gleason's Gym

(New York, United States of America)

Like the others on this list, Gleason’s is more than just a gym.

It’s a boxing sweat shop that has doubled as a Hall of Fame in its own right.

Muhammad Ali, Roberto Durán, and Mike Tyson all trained at Gleason’s at one time or another.

One of the oldest gyms in America, it flourished in the years following the Great Depression and produced its first world champion in Jake LaMotta.

Gleason’s has also been a training ground for Hollywood royalty.

Both Hilary Swank and Robert De Niro honed their craft there for their respective roles in Million Dollar Baby and Raging Bull.

No.2 - 5th Street Gym

(Miami, United States of America)

Anywhere Muhammad Ali called home is an obvious inclusion.

Founded in the 1950s by Angelo Dundee and his brother Chris, the 5th Street Gym became an iconic landmark of the fight game.

Ali’s presence turned it into a shrine, but long before The Greatest, Dundee had already worked with champions like Carmen Basilio and Willie Pastrano.

The gym’s open-air Miami setting and relaxed vibe attracted not only boxing royalty but also Hollywood stars, musicians, and tourists hoping to snap a photo with the likes of Ali or Sugar Ray Leonard.

The gym closed in the early 1990s but has since been revived, maintaining its nostalgic charm and place in boxing folklore.

Few gyms have ever blended stardom and substance quite like 5th Street.

No.1 - Kronk Gym

(Detroit, United States of America)

It’s said that when you descended the stairs into Kronk’s basement gym, you were hit by a furnace-like heat that bordered on unbearable.

That intensity was no accident.

Emanuel Steward, part coach, part alchemist, used every tool at his disposal, including the sweltering Detroit heat to mould young amateurs into world champions.

The Kronk Gym became one of the sport’s most feared and respected institutions.

Thomas "The Hitman" Hearns was the breakout star, a devastating puncher and cornerstone of the legendary Four Kings era. But he was just one of many!

The gym also produced Hilmer Kenty, Milton McCrory, and later played a key role in the careers of Lennox Lewis and Wladimir Klitschko.

At its peak, Kronk wasn’t just a gym, it was a factory of champions and one of the most dominant fight camps in boxing history.
