Following the conclusion of the January transfer window, we take a look at the top 10 most expensive transfers for players from Uruguay.
Darwin Nunez's €85.00m move from Benfica to Liverpool in 2022 tops the list, joining the Reds after scoring 26 goals in Liga Portugal.
Following a goal and assist on his Liverpool debut against Fulham, Nunez has struggled to consistently find the back of the net, scoring 24 times in 83 appearances.
A player who hasn't struggled to find the net is Luis Suarez, who joins the list in second.
Suarez, like Nunez, played for the Reds, but his €81.72m move came when leaving the club to join Barcelona, where he would go on to win four La Liga honours and one UEFA Champions League trophy, among other domestic cup triumphs.
Edinson Cavani is the third centre forward to make the standings, with his €64.50m to Paris Saint Germain in 2013 earning him third spot.
Cavani found the net a remarkable 200 times for PSG, also contributing to 43 assists.
A transfer that perhaps didn't work out for the player, nor the club, is Manuel Ugarte's €60.00m move to PSG in 2023.
After impressing for Sporting CP between 2021 and 2023, the French outfit spent big on the Uruguayan midfielder, but Ugarte would last just a season at the club, before moving on to Manchester United in a deal believed to be around the €50.00m mark.
Lucas Torreira became the third most expensive Uruguayan when making the move to Arsenal for a €28.65m fee in 2018.
Torreira was a tenacious midfielder, who proved key for the Gunners in his first few years at the club, but he would fall out of favour, eventually making a permanent move to Galatasaray in 2022.
Matias Vecino joined Inter Milan in 2017 for €24.00m, a fee that on reflection proved a bargain for the Italian side.
Vecino would play 127 games for the club, winning the Serie A in the 2020/21 campaign.
Rodrigo Bentancur's €21.70m move to Juventus in 2017 came off the back of two impressive seasons for Boca Juniors, though it would be no surprise if the Old Lady were keeping an eye on his progression as he advanced through the youth setup.
After five successful years at the club, winning three Serie A trophies, he would make the move to North London, signing for Tottenham.
Diego Forlan joined Atletico Madrid in 2007 for a €21.00m fee which, at the time, made him the most expensive Uruguayan player in history.
Forlan went on to score 96 goals in 198 games for the club, before his move to Inter in 2011.
Having already represented four Italian clubs, Diego Laxalt made it a fifth when joining AC Milan for €19.00m in 2018.
While he officially spent three years contracted to Milan, he would have loan spells at Torino and Celtic in this period, eventually signing for Dynamo Moscow in 2021.
Mathias Olivera, a regular in the Uruguay national team setup, made a €16.50m move to Napoli in 2022 and still remains at the club, over 80 appearances later.
Arguably his, and Napoli's, most impressive campaign came in the 2022/23 season, where his side would go on to lift the Serie A.
