Root capitalising on a dropped catch from Babar Azam on 186 to move alongside a group of iconic batters including Sachin Tendulkar and Younis Khan with his sixth career double hundred.
It was his first 200+ score since February 2018 where Root chalked up 218 against India in Chennai.
Of those with six or more double hundreds, only Root, Kane Williamson and Virat Kohli remain active, with the latter recording one more double century than Root with seven.
The legendary Don Bradman leads the charts with 12 double hundreds over the course of his 20-year Test career, one more than Sri Lankan ace Kumar Sungakkara achieved.
Brian Lara scored nine double hundreds for the West Indies, which includes his 400 not out against England in 2004.
