Most combined appearances for Manchester United and Newcastle since 1992

We take a look at the players who have made the most combined appearances for Manchester United and Newcastle since the inaugural Premier League season in 1992.

• Nicky Butt (488)

Nicky Butt made 488 combined appearances for Man Utd and Newcastle, with his longest spell coming at the Red Devils, playing 339 matches between 1992 and 2003.

His six year spell at the Magpies came to an end in 2010, where he would join South China, retiring just a year later.

• Andy Cole (317)

Like Butt, a large percentage of Cole's 317 combined appearances came at Man Utd, playing just 73 times for Newcastle.

That said, he was a prolific goalscorer for both clubs, finding the net on 111 occasions for Man Utd and scoring 59 goals for Newcastle.

• Martin Dubravka (170)

Martin Dubravka takes the third spot on this list, despite playing just twice for Manchester United.

He did, however, play 168 times for Newcastle between 2017 and 2024, with his loan spell at Man Utd coming in 2022.

• Alan Smith (157)

Alan Smith didn't surpass the 100 appearance mark at either club, though he did enjoy a successful time at Man Utd.

Smith was part of a Premier League winning squad under Sir Alex Ferguson in the 2006/07 campaign, beating Chelsea to the league by six points.

• Keith Gillespie (135)

Similarly to Dubravka, Keith Gillespie's time at Man Utd was short, playing just 375 minutes across nine appearances for them.

The Northern Ireland international scored 11 and assisted 14 across 126 games for Newcastle.

• Ronny Johnsen (135)

Ronny Johnsen joined Man Utd from Besiktas in 1996, where he would go on to make 132 appearances.

The defensive minded player spent time at Aston Villa before his move to Newcastle in 2004, where he would play just three times in total.

• Danny Simpson (135)

Danny Simpson equals Johnsen's tally of 135 combined appearances for the two clubs.

Simpson, however, played 129 games of these games for Newcastle and just six for Man Utd, despite breaking through the youth academy setup at the Manchester club.

• Louis Saha (116)

Louis Saha's form in front of goal was significantly better when playing for the Red Devils, netting 31 times in 105 games.

He was unable to hit the ground running during his loan spell at Newcastle in 1998, scoring once in 11 games.

• Michael Owen (111)

Falling five appearances short of Saha's 116 combined appearances, Michael Owen joins the list in ninth.

The 2001 Ballon d'Or winner had a career hindered by injuries, and perhaps would have been higher up the list without them.

• Gabriel Obertan (88)

The French winger played just 20 times for Man Utd before his move to Newcastle in 2011.

Gabriel Obertan managed to find the net on just three occasions for Newcastle, despite making 68 appearances.
