Players with most combined appearances for Manchester United and Chelsea since 1992

Take a look at the players who have made the most combined appearances for Manchester United and Chelsea since 1992.

Premier League

• Juan Mata

The technically supreme Juan Mata joined Chelsea from Valencia in 2011 and helped the club to their maiden UEFA Champions League title in his first season at Stamford Bridge.

Chalking up 110 appearances for the Blues, Mata joined Manchester United in January 2014 for a then club record fee of £37.1m, with the Spaniard clocking up 283 appearances for the Red Devils over an eight-year period.

• Nemanja Matic

Chelsea snapped up Nemanja Matic for a £1.5m from Serbian outfit Kosice in 2009 but after an unfruitful two years in west London, he was shipped to Benfica in 2011 as part of a deal to sign David Luiz.

Matic returned to Stamford Bridge in 2014, playing a key role in their Premier League successes of 2015 and 2017 before departing for Manchester United, where he made 189 appearances in all competitions prior to joining Roma in 2022.

• Mason Mount

A product of the Cobham academy, Mason Mount made his Chelsea breakthrough under Frank Lampard and was a key component in the club's 2021 UEFA Champions League triumph.

Mount's deteriorating form in 2022/23 opened the door to a £55m move to Manchester United in July 2023.

• Mark Hughes

Progressing through the Manchester United academy, Mark Hughes spent six years with Manchester United before moving to Barcelona in 1986.

He returned to Old Trafford two years later and was an instrumental figure in the club's dominance of the early 1990s.

A transfer to his boyhood club Chelsea beckoned in 1995 for 'Sparky' and the forward helped the Blues to FA Cup, League Cup and UEFA Cup Winners' Cup before moving to Southampton in 1998.

• Romelu Lukaku

Chelsea acquired the prodigious Romelu Lukaku from Anderlecht in 2011 and the Belgian striker had loan spells with West Brom and Everton where he established himself as one of Europe's hottest prospects before the Blues cashed in on a bid from Everton.

Lukaku's prolific spell saw him move to Manchester United in 2017 where he made just shy of a century of appearances prior to a switch to Inter in 2019.

His goalscoring antics in Serie A resulted in Chelsea re-signing Lukaku in 2021, which transpired to be an underwhelming reunion.

• Jadon Sancho

Jadon Sancho's electrifying form for Borussia Dortmund saw Manchester United splash £73m to sign the former Manchester City academy graduate in 2021.

Disappointing form and conflict with management saw him loaned back to Dortmund in 2024, where a series of standout performances prompted Chelsea to sign him on loan for the 2024/25 season.

• Paul Parker

Paul Parker rose to prominence in west London with productive spells at Fulham and QPR before he joined Manchester United for £2m in 1991.

The defender's five-year stint at Old Trafford was blighted by injury and poor fitness, although he did still clock up over 100 appearances in all competitions for the Red Devils.

Parker's career saw him meander to brief stints at Derby County, Sheffield United and Fulham before joining Chelsea for the final four matches of the 1996/97 season.

• Juan Sebastian Veron

The driving force of Lazio's golden era at the turn of the century, Juan Sebastian Veron was signed by Manchester United for £28.1m in the summer of 2001.

However, the Argentine midfielder underwhelmed for large periods and was signed by Chelsea for £15m two years later, although the arrival of Jose Mourinho signalled an early end to his Blues career and Veron was loaned to Inter for the next two seasons before moving permanently to Estudiantes in 2007.

• Radamel Falcao

Radamel Falcao's inclusion on this list is fascinating when you consider he did not join either Manchester United or Chelsea on a permanent basis.

The Colombian striker joined United on loan from Monaco in 2014 and despite failing to hit the heights anticipated, Falcao remained in the Premier League in the subsequent season as Chelsea signed him on a season-long loan deal.

• Mark Bosnich

Australian goalkeeper Mark Bosnich started his career with Manchester United and briefly returned to Sydney United before moving to Aston Villa in 1992.

Bosnich spent seven years at Villa Park before returning to Old Trafford as Peter Schmeichel's successor, although soon found himself falling down the pecking order following Fabien Barthez's arrival and the Socceroos shot-stopper went to Chelsea in January 2001.
