Australian Football: Montgomery makes striker call

Central Coast Mariners boss Nick Montgomery believes striker Jason Cummings should be called up to the Socceroos squad as he continues to shine in the A-League.

The Mariners are priced at 6/4 to make the top six and play finals and with Cummings in fine form they have a good chance of doing so.

Cummings in great form

Cummings was on target again during the 3-0 win over Adelaide United on Saturday and Montgomery believes the striker is just what the Socceroos need to breath new life into their push for the World Cup.

The former Rangers striker was born in Edinburgh in Scotland but has an Australian grandmother and is eligible to play for the Socceroos. And Montgomery is calling on him to get the nod.

Montgomery was also full of praise for Cummings after the game as he cause the Adelaide United defence problems all night.

The Mariners boss also saluted the performance of fellow forward Marco Urena who chipped in with a goal.

Monty praises duo

"They sat back and we were unlucky a couple of times," Montgomery told reporters after the game. "I told them (Urena and Cummings) last week that I needed more intensity. Jason could have had a hat-trick and he deserved that goal tonight.

"They track back after we went through a period where we didn't have that. It was a good team performance and I'm delighted with three points."

Following a tough start to the year, Central Coast were unbeaten in March and are now just two points outside of the top six.
