MLS weekend review: St. Louis maintain perfect start

St. Louis City's impressive start to the season continued as they showed plenty of heart to come from behind to beat Portland Timbers 2-1 for their third straight victory.

The 2023 MLS campaign is only three games old, but St. Louis have set the standard after winning all three of their matches so far - the only team to do so.

They are now three points clear of the Seattle Sounders in the Western Conference, who fell to a 1-0 defeat to unbeaten FC Cincinnati.

Only one of the 11 matches played in the MLS this weekend finished goalless, and it looks like we could be in for another thrilling campaign in the USA and Canada, with Los Angeles FC trying to defend the Supporters' Shield and MLS Cup.

St. Louis make history at Portland's expense

St.Louis City's perfect start to the 2023 MLS campaign continued on Saturday evening as they recorded their third-straight win.

Bradley Carnell's team have not made life easy for themselves, but they have come back from behind in all three of their games against Austin FC, Charlotte FC and Portland to pick up nine points.

The expansion club are now the first team in MLS history to start the season with three successive come-from-behind wins, and the first expansion side to win two of their first three MLS matches away from home.

Goals from Jared Stroud and Kyle Hiebert gave St. Louis all three points, but despite their strong start to the campaign, they are still 50/1 to win their first MLS Cup.

Wiley catches the eye during Atlanta success

Atlanta United moved to the top of the Eastern Conference standings on Saturday and added to Charlotte FC's woes with a 3-0 victory on their travels.

Teenager Caleb Wiley made a statement on Saturday as he helped Atlanta United win their second game of the new MLS season.

The 18-year-old only scored once last year in his breakthrough campaign, but he showcased his eye for goal in a man-of-the-match display.

Wiley scored two goals and grabbed an assist on Saturday, with all three of Atlanta United's goals coming in the first 45 minutes.

Gonzalo Pineda's side look to have learnt from last year's mistakes when they ended the 2022 campaign with just one win in 16 away games.

Their win ensured Charlotte dropped to the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings, while they are joined at the top on seven points by Nashville SC and Cincinnati.

Toronto's struggles continue

Toronto FC were expected to kick on this season, but they are now 40/1 to win the MLS Cup after another disappointing result, with Columbus Crew holding them to a 1-1 draw away from home.

The Reds have taken two points from their opening three matches, and they failed to hold onto leads during both of those draws.

Their dip in form has coincided with Lorenzo Insigne's groin injury, but he trained last week and could be back in action when they host Inter Miami next weekend.

FC Cincinnati starting to show potential

As mentioned earlier, the Seattle Sounders fell to a 1-0 defeat against FC Cincinnati in what could be a sign of things to come.

The Orange and Blue started life in the MLS with three straight wooden-spoon campaigns, but things are looking up under coach Pat Noonan.

Noonan's men moved up to third in the Eastern Conference after keeping their second straight clean sheet, and they will fancy their chances of overcoming Chicago Fire next week, who have only picked up just one point so far.

NY City edge out Inter Miami

Elsewhere this weekend, New York City beat Inter Miami 1-0, the same scoreline that Chicago lost by when they travelled to face Philadelphia Union.

LA Galaxy were held to a 0-0 draw by Sporting KC, while Nashville SC proved too much for Montreal during a 2-0 success.

San Jose Earthquakes beat the Colorado Rapids 1-0, while Minnesota United picked up an impressive 1-1 draw against MLS giants New York Red Bulls.
