Millwall v Ipswich: Tips, predictions & odds

Millwall and Ipswich have very different targets entering the final third of the season and both could certainly do with a win on Wednesday to bring poor runs to an end.

Millwall v Ipswich tips and predictions

Ipswich to win @ 21/20

Millwall, freefalling towards the relegation mire, and Ipswich, freefalling out of automatic promotion contention, meet at The Den in a match of major significance at either end of the Championship table.

Both of these sides need wins to stop the bleeding with Millwall hoping home advantage gives them an edge and Ipswich believing their astounding early-season form is soon to return.

And given that Millwall’s home form isn’t the best - four wins but also seven losses - and that Ipswich are 27 points superior (with a game in hand), then the visitors look all over the bet.

Kieran McKenna’s men have dropped to fourth with only one win in the last nine. That actually sounds worse than it is when considering the Tractor Boys have lost only two of those nine.

For them, however, a barrage of draws means losing ground on a spectacular scale up against the ferocious assaults from the winning machines that are Leicester, Southampton and Leeds, and it’s critical that Ipswich stay in the play-off chase if a top-two spot is beyond them.

And that means beating teams like Millwall, who they saw off by a 3-1 scoreline at Portman Road in November.

And while Ipswich may be going through a relatively sticky patch, this is still a team that has won at tricky places like Sunderland, Southampton and Watford and only last month was drawing 1-1 at Leicester.

Millwall, meanwhile, have followed a three-match winning run around Christmas by going six without a win in league and cup, with just one point gained from their last five Championship outings.

Jake Cooper to be booked @ 11/4

Millwall will probably be doing the lion’s share of the defending at The Den and expect the tackles to be flying as they try to disrupt Ipswich’s flow.

Millwall are an aggressive side with a physical approach which has earned them 70 yellows and a red, and a place in the Championship’s top-10 for bad boys.

And no player picks up cards more prolifically than ultra-competitive central defender Jake Cooper.

The 29-year-old former Reading player has managed a team-high eight yellow cards this season and is well on course to at least match his haul of 13 from last season, a campaign that ended with four cautions in his final five starts.

He has had at least 10 yellows in four of his last five seasons so is consistent. Ipswich have amassed even more cards than Millwall so the potential is for something fiery and combative and the yellows could well be flying.

Ipswich over 4.5 corners @ 4/6

Ipswich average 5.4 corners per game this season and head for south London on the back of amassing nine in Saturday’s exciting 2-2 draw with West Brom.

They have an unhappy knack of falling behind in matches - in 16 of their 30 league fixtures they have trailed at some point - which means they are often chasing.

And while chasing means carving out chances it also means accruing corners and they do it well.

Millwall concede over five corners per game so getting on over 4.5 Tractor Boys’ corners looks like a route to a profit.
