Mikel Arteta 'upset' with Arsenal's season

Mikel Arteta says that he is 'unsatisfied and upset' after Arsenal finished another season without a major trophy.

Premier League

Three points against Newcastle did secure UEFA Champions League football at the Emirates for the third successive season but the Gunners were soundly beaten to the Premier League title by Liverpool.

We are unsatisfied and upset. But I think we are on the right trajectory.

Speaking after Sunday's 1-0 win over Newcastle, the Spaniard expressed his disappointment with his side's campaign.

He continued: "What I can promise is that I will do my very best and I will give my life, and get every drop of everybody here to squeeze it and get the best out of them."

It was apparent that some fans had already left the stadium before Arteta delivered a speech to thank them for their support.

"We had a dream, it was to be here or in a week's time and bring the big trophies to you guys and we couldn't do it for many circumstances," Arteta said.

"We need to make sure that chasing a dream doesn't get blurry and make sure we chase the dream with positivity and enthusiasm for next season.

"We have to start creating our own history here in this stadium and we started this season. There is much more to come and it won't be easy. These players have the talent."

It is now three successive runner-up finishes in the Premier League for Arsenal and whilst this is a marked improvement on what Arteta inherited, they have failed to win a major trophy for five years.

Arteta captured the FA Cup in his first season at the club but despite playing well, major honours have evaded their grasp.

Fans will quickly turn their attentions to next season after a final day trip to Southampton and the Gunners have reportedly already agreed a deal to strengthen their squad.

Spanish midfielder Martin Zubimendi has been the subject of interest for a plethora of top European clubs but he seems destined to be playing his football in North London in 2025/26.

The 26-year-old was part of Spain's 2024 European Championship winning squad and is seen to be a perfect fit for Arsenal's midfield with an incredible ability to retain and progress the ball from deep.

Arsenal are 5/2 to break the curse of runners-up finishes and win the Premier League next season.
