Mikel Arteta 3/1 to be next Barcelona manager

With Barcelona’s search for a manager ongoing, Mikel Arteta has been cut from 7/1 to 3/1 to be the next Barcelona manager.

bet365’s Steve Freeth said: “Mikel Arteta has already distanced himself from the impending vacancy and he has a lot on his plate in trying to guide Arsenal to their first Premier League title in 20 years, but every bet we've taken on the market in the last 24 hours has been for the Spaniard to return to his former club.”

A number of Europe’s top clubs will see movement in the dugout over the next few months; Bayern Munich announced departure of Thomas Tuchel at the end of the campaign, while Jurgen Klopp said this would be his final season at Liverpool and Xavi also announcing his exit from Barcelona.

Manchester United will also likely move for a new head coach following the INEOS investment, and Euro 2024 may see a few more managerial moves.

Arteta moved to Arsenal with a growing reputation as a coach having worked as part of Pep Guardiola’s backroom staff, and despite an FA Cup in his first half-season at the Emirates, there were calls for Arteta to go from sections of the Gunners fanbase amid stagnation in the league with Arsenal labouring to eighth in Arteta’s first full season.

Even in the Spaniard’s second full season, Arsenal threw away a Champions League place late in the campaign, but in 2023/24, aided by the arrival of long-term loanee William Saliba and the increasingly maturing Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli and Martin Odegaard, the Gunners came as close to a title as they have since 2004.

It may be that Arteta guides Arsenal to an unlikely title and leaves on a high, or falls short and realises he’s taken his side as far as he can. Of course there’s every chance Arteta – whose contract expires in 2025 – remains in North London, and Barcelona won’t be short of alternatives if that is the case.

Hansi Flick, who guided Bayern Munich to the Champions League in 2020, remains out of work after a miserable stint as Germany manager, which saw him become the first man to be dismissed as Die Mannschaft boss. The German remains slight favourite ahead of Arteta at 9/4.

Roberto De Zerbi, like Arteta, has received plaudits throughout his time at Brighton, and while there’s no doubting the Italian’s tactical acumen, it remains to be seen how well that would transfer to a bigger club, and they don’t come much bigger than Barcelona. De Zerbi – a 5/1 shot – has also been linked with the Manchester City and Liverpool jobs, and the Italian may wait to see how things play out elsewhere before committing himself to a move away from the south coast.
