Mick Doohan biography

Born in June 1965, Doohan carved a career in Australian Superbikes before venturing into the 500cc World Championship, where he won five consecutive titles from 1994 to 1998.

1997 proved to be Doohan's most dominant year as he recorded 12 wins from 15 races, winning the championship at a canter.

Doohan retired from motorcycle racing in 1999 following a career-ending accident and later returned to the grid as an advisor for Honda, a post which he held until 2004.

In 2009, he was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame and the first corner at the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit is named after him.

One of only three riders to win five successive 500cc/MotoGP titles, Doohan ranks fourth on the all-time list for race wins.

The Australian set the record for the most Grand Prix wins in a season (12) and the most Grand Prix points won in a season (340), although both have since been surpassed.

His tally of pole positions (58) places him second behind Marc Marquez, with the Spaniard also eclipsing Doohan's record of pole positions in a season after the former Honda man secured 12 pole positions in the 1997 season.

Mick Doohan best races

Doohan transcended motorcycle racing with his fearless speed and he's not short of memorable races in his illustrious career.

His 1994 triumph in Malaysia was arguably his most poignant as it was Doohan's first success since a horrifying accident at Assen in 1992 which nearly resulted in him losing his right leg.

He laid the ghost to rest in the same year as he returned to Assen to take pole and the race win, a pivotal victory in his quest for a first championship.

1996 saw Doohan embroiled in a gripping title battle with Alex Criville and at Jerez, the pair were jostling for the lead throughout the race before Criville fell at the last corner and Doohan prevailed on his path to a third world championship.

The Australian was at his breathtaking best in 1997 and his triumph in Austria was most dominant as he led from start to finish, ending the race 22 seconds clear of the chasing pack.
