Six-time winner Michael van Gerwen suffered a shock 2-1 defeat to Ryan Joyce in the first round of the World Grand Prix.
The three-time world champion took the first set at the unique 'double in' event in Leicester, but things soon began to unravel.
Former semi-finalist Joyce was excellent on the doubles as he capitalised on a below-par van Gerwen to come from behind to clinch a surprise 2-1 victory.
Joyce will now take on former UK Open winner Danny Noppert after the Dutch player overcame Niko Springer in his first round match.
The early rounds of the World Grand Prix are often a graveyard for seeded players, with the best-of-three format particularly dangerous.
It has been a disappointing couple of weeks for van Gerwen who is continuing to struggle to recapture his best form.
His title defence at the World Series of Darts Finals also ended at the first round stage to Daryl Gurney earlier this month.
He will be going back to the drawing board as he bids to find some form ahead of the year-ending World Darts Championship in London.
