We profile the 2023 World Darts Champion, 'Bully Boy' Michael Smith.
Michael Smith is one of the most naturally gifted arrowists to ever toe the oche, so it may come as surprise to read that he's only captured two televised ranking titles.
Yes, one of those was the big one - the 2023 World Darts Championship, but you would expect a player of such skill to have added more than the one other title to his honours list.
That came just a few weeks before his memorable World Championship triumph at the 2022 Grand Slam of Darts, where the St Helens man finally broke his TV title duck!
'Bully Boy' had previously twice finished runner-up in the World Darts Championships, whilst he had also fallen to defeat in the finals of the Masters, Premier League, European Championships, UK Open and the World Matchplay, leading to questions as to whether he would ever win a major televised title.
However, that all changed when Smith defeated Nathan Aspinall in the final of the Grand Slam of Darts in Wolverhampton in 2022, before he used that confidence to establish himself as the best player on earth with his run at Alexandra Palace shortly after.
The World Darts Championship victory in 2023 is clearly the highlight of Michael Smith’s career, but Bully Boy didn’t just land the title, he did so in style.
He became just the second player to record a nine-dart finish in a PDC World Championship final after Adrian Lewis’s effort in 2011 and it was a magical moment.
When he won the 2013 World Youth Championship he was subsequently crowned PDC Young Player of the Year, whilst in 2023 Smith was nominated for Freedom of the Borough status by St Helens Council for sporting services to his hometown city.
Smith has also won the PDC World Cup of Darts, claiming glory for England alongside Luke Humphries in Frankfurt in 2024, whilst he is a six-time European Tour event winner.
On top of that, he has also reigned supreme in each of the Bahrain Darts Masters, Shanghai Darts Masters and US Darts Masters World Series of Darts events.
Michael Smith currently sits second on the PDC's Order of Merit.
Bully Boy took the number one spot from Michael van Gerwen after his World Championship victory in early 2023 but has since slipped below Luke Humphries on the list.
It has been a steady rise for Smith, who broke into the world’s top-16 at the end of the 2015 campaign.
He peaked at number one almost two years ago following his Ally Pally triumph and will be keen to return to the summit again in the near future.
Michael Smith's 'Bully Boy' nickname originates from his time working on a cattle farm, helping the farm owner with tagging the new-born calves.
In an interview in 2018, he said: “For 35 minutes, I got slammed in cowpats and cow’s muck.
"They didn’t always like it and I had one on its back, my fingers in its nose, legs in the air. He called me a bully, and that’s how the nickname stuck."
Michael Smith's current entrance song is 'Shut Up and Dance' by Walk the Moon, and is a firm fan-favourite at events all across the globe.
Michael Smith is 35-yyears-old and will turn 36 on 18th September 2025.
Michael Smith was born in St Helens, Merseyside, England, and the 35-year-old still resides in his hometown to this day.
Michael Smith currently sits second on the PDC's two-year rankings list, having collected £890k in prize money over the past 24 months.
He picketed a cool £500k for winning at Alexandra Palace in 2023, which dwarfed the £150k that he drew when winning the Grand Slam of Darts a few months prior.
Michael Smith ended his long and successful association with Unicorn in July 2023 to team up with Shot.
The Shot Michael Smith Achieve 24g darts have been designed specifically for the St Helens star.
Michael Smith's estimated net worth, including prize money and sponsorship, is estimated to be around £2.5m
He has earned almost £1m in prize money alone since 2023.
