Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo was not included in Michael Carrick's squad to face Leeds United due to a minor injury sustained in training.
Mainoo has been a revelation since Carrick's arrival as interim head coach and the 20-year-old had started in United's last 11 Premier League fixtures.
His form warranted the recognition of England boss Thomas Tuchel and the midfielder featured in friendlies against Uruguay and Japan during the international window.
Following a prolonged break due to the FA Cup quarter-finals, Mainoo was expected to feature in the midfield pivot alongside Casemiro for the visit of Leeds, but the United academy graduate was absent from the 20-man squad and Manuel Ugarte had been selected to deputise.
Ahead of the game, Carrick explained that Mainoo's absence was the result of a minor issue he'd picked up over the weekend.
"In the last 24 hours or so, Kobbie had an issue in training," Carrick told Sky Sports.
"It seems like something minor, but it was enough to keep him out of today's game. It wasn't worth pushing him tonight with the game's we've got coming up.
"Manu [Ugarte] came on against Bournemouth and played really well at the end of the game. He also played for Uruguay during the break, so he's in good shape and we made the decision to pull Kobbie out of it."
Ugarte hadn't started for United since the 2-1 defeat to Brighton in the FA Cup in early January.
The Uruguayan was one of four changes for the hosts with Benjamin Sesko given the nod to lead the line over Bryan Mbeumo.
United will be hopeful Mainoo's injury is not a long-term issue as they face a pivotal period in the season. Carrick's men travel to Stamford Bridge on Saturday to face Chelsea, before a nine-day break when they host Brentford at Old Trafford on Monday 27th April.
The Red Devils are 11/20 favourites to triumph over Leeds as they look to strengthen their grip of third in the Premier League table and secure UEFA Champions League football for next season.
